At Computex 2011 ASUS announced their cheapest netbook the Eee PC X101 which is a $200 netbook. But they didn't really give us information on the release date but it looks like now we know that it's headed to the market some time in July. There will be a $200 MeeGo version and a $310 Windows 7 version. It has a 1.33GHz single core Atom processor and a built in SSD. We don't have any word on a more specific release date though. Super Talent announced a pretty interesting new device today. It's called the Super Talent USB 3.0 Express RC8. It's pretty much a USB 3.0 powered SSD. It uses a SandForce SSD controller to run a small little SSD that's built into a flash drive sized case and it plugs right into a USB 3.0 port on your computer. It offers the same read and write speeds as a standard SSD. The 50GB model should cost around $100 and there are going to be 25GB and 100GB models. Xbox's COO talked about the mobile gaming or handheld gaming market in an interview today. He talked about how the handheld market is very crowded and recently even though the Nintendo 3DS and PSPs have sold well they are still decreasing in sales. He kind of indirectly said that smartphones and tablets are the future for mobile gaming since that's the direction Microsoft is going and I have to agree with him on that. This video shows my new Asus EEE PC X101 running a trimmed version of Windows 7 (achieved with RT Se7en Lite). The screen shots show the following: -Windows Desktop with some Sidebar Gadgets -Basic system information (2GB Memory!) -Free disk space after installing ALL Windows Updates and the programs and drivers seen under 'Programs and Features' -Device Manager showing that all device drivers are installed properly -Memory usage right after system boot I installed the Asus ATK Hotkey Service (www.asus.com to ensure all keyboard hotkeys work as they should and the latest Symantec touchpad drivers for things like two-finger scrolling etc. (www.synaptics.com It boots up pretty fast and runs very well performing tasks like surfing the web with Firefox or having video calls on Skype. I'm sure you can get even better boot times when you get rid of things like the Sidebar and Desktop wallpapers etc. I get a little extra battery life thanks to Windows 7. The X101 is the next evolution of the Eee PC netbook, which was originally created by ASUS and took the world by storm 4 years ago. As you can see, it's quite thin with a profile of only 17.6mm and weighs in at under 1kg. Hardware wise, it's got all the features of a standard netbook, including 802.11b/g and n wifi, Bluetooth 3.0, a webcam, 2 usb ports, an Ethernet connection and a built in SD card reader. It's powered by Intel's latest dual-core atom processor. Depending on the model there's an 8gb ssd or 250gb hdd version. The software is where the X101 is different as it features Intel's new open source operating system, MeeGo. The MeeGo OS is designed for the user that's always on the go, yet wants to stay connected. It has specific applications for accessing social media sites like Facebook, twitter or flickr, much like a smartphone would run. For those who are a bit more traditional, there's also a model with Windows 7 Starter edition. When paired with Instant On capability, the OS quickly boots back up in a matter of seconds, and has a super long idle mode at up to 3 weeks.
