He said he has an old junkyard with 30's and 40's truck bodies in the woods, but it was wet and muddy and hard to get to the day I shot these. Lots of cool projects to be had here. ZHANG: As Detroit automakers battle to survive, their vintage cars in Cuba may outlive them. Lacking access to original car parts Cubans make their own parts or take them from other cars. Here's more. STORY: As US automakers struggle to survive, they can take heart. Their gas guzzling cars may outlive them in Communist-run Cuba. Even a four-decade long trade embargo has not kept determined Cubans from continually fixing up their beloved cars. Detroit relics dating back to the nifty fifties. Just look at Havana's Malecon Avenue. It's a living automobile museum. Old classic Buicks and Fords ramble alongside new Korean and French cars that aren't subject to an embargo, or what Cubans call a "blockade." Lacking access to original car parts, Cubans like taxi driver Luis Alvarez resort to ingenuity. [Luis Alvarez, Taxi Driver]: "We have to invent here a set of pistons. But there are people who make the parts here in Cuba itself." Cabbie Felix Padron scavenges for components. (Road traffic safety more broadly includes roadway design. One of the first formal academic studies into improving car safety was by Cornell Aeronautical Labs of Buffalo, New York. The main conclusion of their extensive report is the crucial importance of seat belts and padded dashboards. Improvements in roadway and automobile designs have steadily reduced injury and death rates in all first world countries. I had someone ask whether or not they had some less expensive project cars at Country Classic Cars, so I thought I'd give you a look at some of the cars outside. Obviously, they tend to keep the nicest cars inside, out of the weather, but there are still some decent cars outside as well. This isn't the greatest quality vid, because I was trying to drive and film at the same time. It still should give you some idea of the project cars they have available. My next vintage car restoration project, a 1924 Bean Fourteen 2.4-litre... WANTED FOR THIS PROJECT: * The original radiator cap back, which after being on for 85 years some unscrupulous little **** stole off the car at the Brightwells saleroom on 12/12/09. * Spare Bean 14 parts, photos and literature. * Large open sports-tourer body (any condition, parts of or plans) to suit 4' 8" track, and lightweight cycle wings. * Set of large hub 21" Wire Wheels, either 5-stud bolt-on (same pitch circle as a Morris Oxford but larger centre hole) or Rudge Whitworth type knock-ons with ideas on conversion hubs for these. * Any Bean motor car advice! Does anyone know what mods were done to the 1924-26 hill climbing Beans or Francis Birtles Bean? Should I lighten the flywheel and increase the compression ratio for instance?

A vintage car exhibition was showcased in Jeddah shopping malls under the banner of Classic Car Carnival, featuring more than 40 cars, whose designs captivated the audiences. Alongside the exhibition, a contest was held to find the best, rarest and oldest car. Most of the cars were manufactured between 1926 and 1980. Despite the age of these cars, their prices sometimes exceed that of the latest of automobiles. When you wander in one of Jeddah's malls, it looks like you're on the set of a black and white movie -- except that everything is set in dazzling colors and designs. Said Assiri, President of the Organizing Committee said, "The organizing committee listed three prizes for the oldest, rarest and best cars. The prize is a one-week visit to the car manufacturer's country to learn how their cars are manufactured". Ali Sherif, a winner of the oldest and best car awards said, "The festival encompassed more than 40 vintage cars in various designs and colors, however, a 1930 "Rolls Royce" that once belonged to King Edward V, was excluded from receiving any award because it did not comply with the Gulf specifications". Abdallah Hafny, winner of the rarest car said,"Three cars won the awards; the oldest car award went to a Ford T that dates back to 1926. The rarest car award went to a 1960 Cadillac, and the best car award to a 1979 Mercedes that wasn't driven for more than 7500 kilometers".
