On September 21-23, during the Photokina 2010 Fair, Epson Red Sea carried out live underwater broadcasts in full HD from bottom of the Red Sea in Eilat, Israel, straight to the Photokina Fair in Cologne, Germany. It was a very complicated project to establish, requiring a team of more than 30 experts, the most innovative technology and many months of preparations, but when the first live broadcast was finally presented on a huge screen at the fair, all of that didn't seem to matter any longer. Theres an incredible amount of life in an Ozark stream, and most of the activity is going on right down there under the surface hidden from our view. But all it takes is a mask, snorkle and the willingness to get wet, and a whole new world comes to view. Youve heard of birdwatching, well were about to go fish watching with underwater photographer Dr. Bill Roston. To start out with, to get a mask that fits, you should be able to take your mask, do not put the strap on it, and stick it to your face and inhale through your nose. VO- Before we take the plunge we need to go over some snorkeling basics. Bill- Can all of you do that? Can all of you suck it against your face without air coming through it? If youve got a mask that leaks too much air, its going to leak water. Lets lay down and check and make sure we dont have any leakages before we get out there. Ok, stick your head underwater, inhale. As a professional underwater photographer, Franco Banfi has spent much of his life exploring a mesmerizing world that thrives beneath the waves. His images reveal a beautiful, captivating environment where humans are at best short-term guests. "I don't mind cold places, fresh or salt," says the Ticino-based lensman, who has shot the bottoms of icebergs in frozen Swiss lakes, beluga whales in Russia and mysterious wrecks of the Adriatic. These are the visuals for a seminar I'm presenting in Bonaire. It will be part of the activities in a celebration which will include me being honored with Bonaire's Lifetime Achievement Award. In this introductory video I show the audience examples of the different kinds of subject matter which I have found require somewhat different techniques. There are subjects which are rooted and motionless (such as corals and the reefs of which they are part), as distinguished from subjects which are capable of moving, but do so quite slowly (nudibranchs, shrimp, crabs). Then there is working with human models, photographing large animals in open water, various kinds of sharks, and photographing the colorful but ward tropical reef fish. Hope you enjoy the material!
