At the IAAF Track & Field World Championships in Osaka, Japan, several runners collide into a barrier during the opening minutes of the men's 3000-meter steeplechase. Gunther Weidlinger of Austria tripped and fell head-first into the barrier and was not able to continue. (WCSN, WCSN.com)

Kenyans deliver clean sweep in steeplechase
Kenya's dominance in the steeplechase continued today with a clean sweep by Brimin Kipruto, Ezekiel Kemboi, and Richard Mateelong, winning with times of 8:13.82, 8:16.94, and 8:17.59, respectively. In 1897, land owner George C. Tilyou opened Steeplechase Park. Steeplechase Park, a family-oriented amusement park, embraced the thrills of a horse race as its theme. It would eventually become the longest running amusement park in Coney Island history. With the success of Steeplechase, other itinerant amusements began to flourish in Coney Island. In 1903, Coney Islands next great park rose on the north side of Surf Avenue, Coneys main thoroughfare. Luna Park portrayed a fantastical vision of a trip to the moon. In an age when electricity was considered a luxury, Luna Park was bedecked by thousands of lights which made it glow at night.

Amazingly Katy got up and ran two more laps before her coaches urged her to stop so that they could make sure that she was ok. She hit her head and got a small cut cut on it and got a couple of deep bruises on her legs. We posted the video only after receiving permission from Katy. The video was shot with a GoPro HD Hero2 and the photos were shot with a Canon 1D Mark IV and a 16-35mm F/2.8 lens. Both the photos and videos were shot by Jaren Wilkey/BYU. As bicycle racing gets more popular it is morphing into all sorts of different competitive formats. Cyclocross has been around for almost 100 years, but it's only now coming into its own. The Tour de France is the marquee event in endurance bike racing. BMX is the new Olympic biking sport, but it's the hybrid race, cyclocross, that's growing fastest. The women's elite division was a typically tight race. Major Beth Mason, a physical therapist stationed at West Point, was a favorite in the highly competitive field at Newburgh. Mason was in second place after a grueling first lap. She was focused enough to take the lead on lap number 2. She pushed hard to maintain her lead and lap the trailers. With 3 laps to go Beth was cruising, comfortably in front. Then, with one lap to go, she had company. Katina Walker had closed fast and, when they came around for the stretch run, it was Walker in the lead. Steeplechase FAIL
During the steeplechase at my highschool's annual relays (I go to Alhambra High School in Martinez, California), one of the runners tries to go over the steeple, flips, and goes in headfirst into the freezing cold water pit. The water pit is slanted, so the deepest it goes is about 4 feet. Yes, he did hit his head on the cement, but don't worry, we consulted him after and he was fine.
