I spotted this copy on Ebay and snagged it for $20. It's in near mint condition. I had a chance to compare the MFSL release with a new 180g reissue and I prefer the MFSL release by a slight margin. The MFSL release has a little more bottom end, midrange fullness and analog type 'warmth'. The 180g version was a bit more forward with the vocals standing out of the mix more. Both vinyl reissues totally blew away the original vinyl release and my store bought CD. HiFi 101 The Rega Top End Experience!
A report of a visit I paid to Audio T in Brighton in order to listen to their top end Isis CD player and Osiris Amplifier. Rega is not known for its hi end stuff - normally they concentrate on producing budget to midrange hifi separates that sound better than many other products in their respective price categories. For instance the RB251 tonearm is only about £100, yet it is used on many non-Rega decks far more expensive than the humble P2 it was designed for. So for them to launch an amp and CD player that together cost £12000, they must have thought that they could produce something quite remarkable... That's not to say I would ever justify spending that sort of money on hi fi, but it does give the wannabe audiophile a sound to aspire to, when tweaking the system. I would have loved to have heard the Osiris with vinyl, but that wasn't possible today. But it did give me faith that CD's - even LOUDNESS war ones - can sound great and I bought some speaker cable that I hope will tweak out a few minor niggles in my CD replay. CD's I used to test were: This Charming Life (Songs "This Charming Life" and "Goddess of Change") JOAN ARMATRADING Beyond Skin (Songs "The Pilgrim", "The Conference" and "Beyond Skin") NITIN SAWHNEY Hope For the Hopeless (Songs "San Fransisco" and "Make You Crazy") BRETT DENNEN Peasants, Pigs & Astronauts (Songs "Sound Of Drums" and "Namami Nanda") KULA SHAKER As you can see, they let me have a jolly good play!
