It must have been shocking to hear the b word in the more respectable era of the 1930s. Leslie Howard is quite sinister and misanthropic in this movie and Wendy Hiller is hilarious as the cockney girl trying to become a lady. This is the classic speech where she tries to sound posh but just ends up using a posh voice and common vocabulary to regale the vicar's tea party with tales of her dissolute family life: "It was them who pinched it what done her in"...

Milburn, Margaret, and Sonny: The Drysdales are the Clampetts' next door neighbors. Milburn is the Commerce Bank's tightwad president and the friendly bumpkins' confidant. The haughty Mrs. Drysdale touts a heritage that traces back to the Mayflower, but money-hungry Milburn's concerns are strictly monetary. When suffering an anxiety attack, Milburn sniffs a stack of money and is quickly revived. Mr. Drysdale appeases the Clampetts and says that anything they do is unquestionably right. He often forces others, especially his secretary, to placate the Clampetts' by granting their unorthodox requests. Although wife Margaret, a blue-blooded Bostonian, has obvious disdain for the "peasant" hillbillies, she tacitly agrees to tolerate them (rather than Milburn lose their ever growing account--which is $96000000 in 1969, equal to $575125683 today). Margaret loathes all four "vagabonds," but her most heated rivalry is with Granny, with whom she occasionally has some "scraps." Raymond Bailey appears in 247 episodes. Harriet E. MacGibbon appears in 55 episodes between 1962 and 1969, she is not seen in the last two seasons of the show although is occasionally mentioned. Margaret's aged father has gambled away most of their money. Mrs. Drysdale's son--and Milburn's Stepson--is Sonny (played by Louis Nye), who is a forty-something ...

Pygmalion By George Bernard Shaw Directed by Owen Gimblett Season: 8th May - 19th June 2010 Preview night 7th May Friday and Saturday nights at 8pm Sunday matinée at 4.30pm * Book Here Download a PDF flyer 'I want to be a lady in a flower shop stead of selling at the corner of Tottenham Court Road. But they won't take me unless I can talk more genteel. He said he could teach me. Well, here I am ready to pay him--not asking any favor--and he treats me as if I was dirt.' If ever a play deserved the title 'classic', the first offering of our season is that play! Based on the classical Greek myth, Pygmalion has delighted audiences for generations as it plays on the complex business of human relationships in a class-based Society. When Professor Henry Higgins comes across a poor and uneducated Cockney girl named Eliza Doolittle he makes a bet that he can take Eliza from the gutters of London and pass her off as a society lady, by simply teaching her the right dialect in which to speak. The one thing he overlooks is that his "creation" has a mind of her own. Shaw's brilliant comedy is of course well known as the source of the hit musical My Fair Lady but those who have seen the musical shouldn't assume they know the play. Recently revived to huge acclaim in London by Sir Peter Hall and on Broadway starring Claire Danes, Shaw's incisive wit drives this timeless, utterly charming comedy. Directed by New Zealand based Director and set designer Owen Gimblett and with sumptuous ...

PYGMALION Co-produced / written / directed / designed by ELEONORA VOLPE for United Multimedia Projects © 2001 Synopsis A young sculptor questions himself upon his feelings for the beautiful model sitting for him: is he in love with the real woman or is it passion for an object of inspiration? Is it just a shape, an image tantalising his imagination, a mechanism of artistic creation, or genuine feelings of a man for a woman? The legend of the ancient sculptor Pygmalion comes back to his mind... Pygmalion makes a beautiful statue and falls in love with it. He then asks a powerful magician to bring her to life. The magician warns him that along with the four elements - earth, air, water and fire - she will need his creative energy too. When Galathea becomes a real woman, Pygmalion's happiness lasts only a short time. Soon the loss of his artistic skills starts hunting him. Seeing that he was suffering, Galathea gives her life back in exchange for his creativity. So love is gone, but the emptiness that replaces it in the artist's heart tells him that the solitary process of pursuing love and perfection were actually part of his creative energy, his challenge and his true companion. About the film Pygmalion as a project was conceived in 2001, when Rauf Atamalibekov, owner of an upcoming post-production company in Moscow, UMP - United Multimedia Projects, asked me to make a 20 minute fantasy film that could demonstrate the company's potential.
