Grand Rapids Video Response To Newsweek

Transcript by www.newsy.com BY JIM FLINK You're watching multisource US video news analysis from Newsy. How do you handle an insult? Fight back? Turn the other cheek? When Newsweek told Grand Rapids, Michigan it was dying -- the entire city got together -- and crafted a nearly 10-minute response. Take a look. "But something touched me deep inside the day the music died... So bye bye Miss American Pie... drove my Chevy to the Levy but the levy was dry...." Oh -- that's just the beginning. Back to the insult for a sec -- if you wanna call it that. It was issued waaay back in January. Grand Rapids was number 10 in Newsweek's list of dying cities, in large part because of an exodus of young people. Newsweek noted... "Michigan dominates much of this list, with several cities experiencing significant declines in population as the state suffered high unemployment rates and above average foreclosures in recent years due mainly to the collapse of the auto industry." The Grand Rapids Press Julia Bower immediately took exception to how Newsweek gathered its statistics, saying the survey stopped its count at the city limits -- which is missing a big part of Grand Rapids' reach. "Never mind (Grand Valley State University's) student body in Allendale. Or the bustling businesses in Kentwood or Cascade Township. Between 2000 and 2009, the city lost just over 2 percent in population and dropped more than 2 percent in its youth headcount." It took four months -- to craft this response ...

Newsweek's Michele Bachmann Cover Sparks Controversy

Newsweek's latest issue features a Michele Bachmann cover that's sure to stir up controversy. The cover shows Bachmann standing against a stark blue background, looking directly into the camera with a wide-eyed expression. The headline advertising the magazine's story reads, "THE QUEEN OF RAGE." "Rage" is a word that doesn't appear in Newsweek's actual profile of Bachmann, though author Lois Romano does criticize what she calls the "radical" nature of the Tea Party that Bachmann champions. Conservative websites are already crying foul over the cover, with some saying it makes Bachmann look "crazy" and one blogger asking, "Can anyone really say with a straight face that the mainstream media is not totally biased against conservatives?" It's not the first time Newsweek has faced conservative backlash for a cover. In June, the magazine portrayed Mitt Romney as one of the stars of the Broadway show "The Book of Mormon." And, of course, it drew widespread criticism for its infamous Sarah Palin cover in 2009. See the Bachmann cover below, and tell us whether you think it crosses a line.

Princess Diana Photoshopped Newsweek Cover Causes Uproar

Twitter is in an uproar over the latest Newsweek magazine cover. Princess Diana has been aged digitally to estimate what sheapos;d look like now, a nod to her 50th birthday, which she would have celebrated on July 1. Lady Di was Photoshopped walking with Kate Middleton, but what stands out most to the coverapos;s critics is her zombie-like appearance. Badbadsquirrel tweeted, "You know the undead are big when zombie Princess Diana graces the cover of a major magazine. Thanks, Newsweek." Princess Diana biographer and Newsweek Editor-in Chief Tina Brown is taking most of the flack, though she has yet to comment on the backlash. Brown took over Newsweek in late 2010 and had said of her vision for the magazine, Newsweek will be "about filling the gaps left when a story has seemingly passed."
