Mitsuoka Orochi - new type Super Car
Ever heard of a car manufacturer "Mitsuoka"? Even in Japan not many people recognize this brand, but they are the 10th car maker established here. They don't really develop cars from the beginning, and they are rather a coachbuilder, taking production cars like Nissan March and replacing the bodywork with its own custom designs. This "Orochi" is their biggest hit, its name meaning "8-headed dragon" appearing in old Japanese myths. The exterior is wide and low, but with 233hp and 5AT transmission it's not really a sports car. In fact, Mitsuoka says "Orochi is the car to ride to gather attention from everyone", and categorizes this car as a "Fashion-Super Car". Orochi Mitsuoka Motors Mitsuoka Motors has consistently continued to create "hand-built vehicles crafted by Japanese artisans". In 2007 Mitsuoka Motors announced its first sports car, the Orochi, and exhibited it at the Tokyo Motor Show. The Orochi is designed with a low stance with an overall height of 118cm, an overall length of 456cm, and overall width of 203cm. The dragon like serpent image of the Orochi is reflected by its features such as a bonnet grill and lights that project the image of a snake, a bonnet that hints of a snake like scales, and a form that uses multiple curved lines. The exterior was carefully calculated for optimum aerodynamic performance to maintain sufficient down forces in the front and suppress subtle air turbulence. The engine is a mid-ship mounted 3.3L V6 Toyota DOHC engine and is coupled to an electronically controlled, 5-step automatic transmission to reliably transmit full engine power. From both design and performance aspects, the Orochi is deserving of the title "super car". To emphasize that the super car is Japanese made, gold and platinum foil, which are traditional Japanese artisan mediums are used in the interior to express unprecedented "Japanese beauty". Just as high grade wood materials are used in the interiors of European luxury cars, the interior of the Orochi features luxurious Japanese workmanship. Little known outside of Asia, Mitsuoka Motor Co. is a smaller Japanese car manufacturer that primarily builds retro-looking automobiles that are usually to some extent derivative of well-known classic cars from England. By contrast, the mid-engine Orochi is definitely a bold and original styling statement. There doesn't appear to be much information available on this concept. Early reports were that the first showcars put on display did not run. We sighted this rare car at Orchard Road. Most of you have never heard of it, unless you live in Japan. It's called the Mitsuoka Himiko, a small sports car based on the Mazda MX-5.
