The Metre and Time
The development of measuring systems is a great human accomplishment. The early Egyptians created a unit of length, the cubit, based on the human forearm. The English and others, used the human foot and grains of barleycorn to measure length. The metric system started with an fascinating attempt to define the metre using time. The metre evolved through a number of incarnations many involving distances taken from the planet. Today the meter is defined using the speed of light. This definition relies on a reliable means for measuring time. Time and space have been joined in our current definition of the metre.

New Italian Freediving Records
In August this year, Federico Mana became the deepest man in Italy, claiming two Italian National Records in Constant Weight (100 metres) and Free Immersion (92 metres). With his Constant Weight dive, Federico becomes a member of an exclusive group those eight men who have dived under their own power to the 100 metre mark. The team from Blue Eye FX Productions were on location at the Only One Apnea Centre to record the event. Viva Italia!

Views of the Standard and Metre gauge railways of Switzerland. Firstly, some frieght trains near Gotthard, famous for its pass, and very, very long tunnel. Secondly, a look at the lake and the Paddle Steamer 'Lotschberg', as well as some metre gauge traffic, at Brienz. Brienz, as many will know, is the bottom terminus of the Brienz and Rothorn Steam Rack Railway. A possible thing to come? Thirdly, some more metre gauge traffic at Realp, at the foot of the Furka pass. The station only serves a population of around 160, but is used for car transport trains, to carry travellers along the rail route, rather than negotiating the Furka pass itself, like we did. (In low thick cloud may I add!)

Mo Farah did his best to prevent the first big event of the indoor season being upstaged by the man who was not there as he set a British record for the 3000 metres at the Aviva International Match in Glasgow on Saturday. "I knew I was in good shape but not that good," he said after running 7min 40.99sec to beat John Mayock's seven-year-old mark. It was just reward for Farah's gruelling winter regime, which has involved training camps in Kenya and Ethiopia. He said that he has taken inspiration from the work ethic of the Africans, running 120 miles a week and training twice on Christmas Day. Farah has long been the bright hope of British distance running, but was one of the biggest disappointments of the Beijing Olympics last summer, when he failed to reach the 5000 metres final. "To break the British record is a real bonus," he said. "I never expected that. I've had a very good winter and it is showing."

Australian stunt Motocrosser Robbie Maddison not only jumped over the 85-metre wide Corinth Canal at height of nearly 100 metres in Greece on Thursday, but he also had a bigger hurdle to overcome: fear. Motocross Freestyle, with breathtaking tricks such as flips performed at heights of up to three storeys high, is one the worlds most dangerous sports. Robbie Maddison is one of the worlds best in FMX. But that is not enough for the 28-year-old Australian. Maddison is always looking for even greater thrills and has completed a number of spectacular jumps that would have made pioneering stuntman Evel Knievel proud. In 2007 and 2008 Maddison set three world records for distance all the way to 107 metres (350 feet). In 2009 he celebrated New Years Eve in Las Vegas by jumping up 30 metres onto the Arc de Triomph in front of Paris Las Vegas and then descended off the monument to ground level. Last year pictures of him jumping the Tower Bridge over the Thames River with a backflip while the drawbridge was open went around the world. Many Motocrossers have wanted to jump across the Corinth Canal, which built in 1893. But the Australian was the first to succeed. PSP - Invizimals™ Huge Traps
As you may remember, last year our friends at Novarama, who develop Invizimals, experimented playing the game using their PSPs and large traps (around 2 metres by 2 metres) Last year we posted some large trap videos on the PSP's Your Whole World YouTube channel (here www.youtube.com and the blog (here blog.eu.playstation.com and (here blog.eu.playstation.com which received a great response from the community We had an overwhelming response from Invizimals fans to go even bigger, so the guys at Novarama went ahead and made a 20 x 20 (made by using lengths of black cloth) metre trap and took it around Barcelona to shoot some video footage to share with you and here are the results, I hope you like them. We made this trap by using large lengths of black cloth. Also in the video are Invizimals™ & Invizimals™ Shadow Zone Lead Designer; Dani Sanchez-Crespo and Juan Luis Abadia, Novarama's, Lead Programmer as well as some of the rest of the team.
