The Three Meter Geodynamo experiment is the latest in a series of progressively larger experiments in the Lathrop Lab at the University of Maryland to study how planets generate magnetic fields. We are essentially trying to build planetary cores in the lab. We hope the Three Meter experiment will generate a magnetic field from a rotating turbulent flow of liquid sodium metal. The experiment is now in an assembly and testing phase. When complete it will contain nearly 13 tons (13000kg) of sodium metal flowing in the space between a 3 meter diameter outer sphere (shown here in a rotation test) and a 1 meter diameter inner sphere concentric with the outer. Each sphere has a 350 horsepower (250kW) electric motor to drive its rotation. The inner sphere models the Earth's solid inner core; the sodium models the Earth's fluid outer core, the source of the Earth's main magnetic field. What is happening is your light meter is seeing extremely bright stage lights and it is tricking your camera to "think" there is a ton of light in the whole scene when there really isn't. Let me paint the picture for you. If you are inside and you see your light meter read 1/8000 of a second you should know that that is not correct. Now its correct in the term that if you were shooting just the stage lights it would need to be shot that fast. But if you are trying to capture a band they would just come out dark because of such a fast shutter speed. This is all part of the mentality of photography and knowing when something is either to good to be true or just can not be right. Experienced rescuers said it's "amazing" a man survived going over Niagara Falls Monday morning - only the fourth time someone has taken the 54-meter plunge and lived. An unidentified man went over the Horseshoe Falls in what police say was an unsuccessful suicide bid that unfolded in front of hundreds of Victoria Day tourists. Rescuers found him at the bottom of the Horseshoe Falls, on the rocks near the Journey Behind the Falls attraction. Niagara Parks Police and firefighters were called to the area at 10:20 am, after receiving unconfirmed reports from tourists that a man had gone over the falls. After interviewing witnesses and checking surveillance tape, police confirmed the man had gone into the water about six to 10 metres upriver from the brink of the Horseshoe Falls. "We have confirmed reports from witnesses that he entered (the water) above the Canadian Horseshoe Falls and was swept over the falls. He went over the falls and survived," said parks police Sgt. Chris Gallagher, the first rescuer to make contact with the man. "He did this of his own accord." A police report states the man climbed over the retaining wall near the brink of the falls and deliberately jumped into the water. He was seen going over the falls, then spotted by witnesses surfacing in the lower river near the observation deck at the Journey Behind the Falls.
