THE LITTLE MERMAID
Against all odds, Shiloh Pepin of Portland, Maine turned 8 years old in August 2007. She was born with Mermaid Syndrome, or Sirenomelia, one of the rarest conditions known to man. This condition means the foetus fails to develop normally below the waist, resulting in a fusion of the lower limbs. Of the few foetuses that actually make it to birth, most die within hours of leaving the womb. Although there are thought to be five known survivors worldwide - Shiloh is the only one not to have had her legs separated by surgery. Having only one, partially-working kidney, no lower colon and no genital organs, such an operation up until now has been too dangerous for her. Her plucky character and determination have so far seen her through - she even plays football and attends dance classes. But she's now entering the most risky and challenging time of her life. Her pediatrician, Dr Matt Hand, knows that if she's to survive, she will eventually need her legs separated. It's an operation that has divided the family: mother Leslie wants the separation to go ahead, while father Elmer and Shiloh herself are reluctant. MERMAIDS is the story of the turbulent relationship between a flamboyant, outrageous mom (Cher) and her two daughters (Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci) who just want a normal, stable life. That is why I made this video. So you can =) Q: Where did you get your monofin and how much did it cost? A: I got my Finis Tempo monofin online for about $50. Try ebay or searching on google. Q: How did you make your top? A: I covered an old swim top with material. Q: How do you get the monofin in and out of the tail? A: You can either leave the bottom open and extend your fabric a few inches past the monofin, or just roll up the monofin and work it in and out of the tail. Q: What is the material called and where do you get it? A: It is just swimwear/dance material. You can find it at craft stores that carry a variety of fabrics. It comes in all kinds of colors and designs. Mine happens to be a teal hologram material. Jo~Ann fabrics is where I go. You can also go to AC Moore arts and crafts. Q: How much is the material? The Celtic legends of Mermaids may have their origins in the part-man part-fish Sea-God Oannes who was worshiped by the Babylonians around 5000BCE, who was also the Sun-God, rising out of the sea each day and disappearing back under the waves each night. He was a civilizing force for the good, bringing light and life to his people, representing the positive values connected with the sea. Oannes' Goddess counterpoint was Atargatis, a Semetic moon Goddess who became the first official Mermaid and represents nature herself.. The Mermaid is the most persistent and pervasive symbol of the old Goddess energy that represents women, particularly their mysterious, life-generating element. However, battling the Ancient ways in an effort to establish itself, the early Christian church promoted the ideas that mermaids were dangerous temptresses and had no souls, but embodied the lure of fleshy pleasures to be shunned by the God-fearing. The anti feminine propaganda was also carried out against many harmless old women who were put to death as witches by burning or hanging for practicing traditional herb-lore. Similarly the Goddess-Mermaid was stripped of all her spiritual qualities and relegated to be an evil Siren of the seas. The 2003 movie Mermaids About: Diana, a stubborn mermaid, is determined to bring justice to the men who killed her merman father.
