In PRK the epithelium (top layer of the cornea) is scraped off and then the laser treatment is applied. A contact lens is used as a "bandage" to decrease discomfort. The epithelium then grows back over the bare area during the next few days. In LASEK the epithelium is exposed to 20% alcohol which helps separate epithelium from the cornea. The epithelium is pushed to one side and laser treatment applied. The epithelial layer is replaced back onto the eye and held in place with a contact lens. The contact lens is then removed a few days later. LASEK is hence a "no knife"/flap operation. Epi-Lasik is a smilar procedure that uses a keratome like that used for Lasik, but engineered to only separate the epithelium. This is the Lasek (using PRK) surgery of my eyes done on April 11, 2008, performed by Dr. Chynn at Park Avenue Laser in New York City. It is the last few seconds of the right eye, and the entire procedure of the left eye. Pros: State of the art equipment; friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive staff. Cons: I didn't get to meet Dr. Chynn until right before the surgery (their website says otherwise); recovery time was longer than alluded to (and yes, I know Lasek recovery takes longer than Lasik); Post Op prescription medication was expensive and Insurance did not cover much of the cost of them. Overall experience was very good. If you are considering Laser Vision Correction, I would definitely recommend Park Avenue Laser.

I had the pleasure of being invited to attend as a celebrity driver to one of this years 2010 Viper ACR-X cup races which was held at the Pocono Int. raceway. The Viper has 650hp and 605lbs of torque. I hit the top speed of 170mph and corner speeds were as high as 150mph. Needless to say I had a blast and I even got a podium finish. I had my Epi-LASEK surgery done at Park Avenue Laser Vision (www.parkavenuelaser.com) to correct my Rx of OS -3.25 and OD -3.75. This POV is not the DVD Dr. Chynn provides you of your surgery from the camera attached to the laser. My DVD was accidentally ejected by one of the receptionists without it being finalized, meaning blank disc...I'm actually glad my wife was with me in the OR recording everything with our camcorder...from being prepped for surgery, everything in between, to the end. I like this better actually!! How did I come to choose having my surgery at Park Avenue Laser Vision, you ask?? I did a TON of research prior to selecting Dr Chynn. First was the no cutting, no flap LASEK procedure (different from LASIK). Second was Dr Chynn's credentials (Dartmouth, Columbia, Harvard, Emory, NYU...and he's a member of MENSA)!! Third is he has 12000+ cases under his belt with ZERO LAWSUITS for complications...compare that to a certain other LASIK practice that advertises on NYC radio stations, but who has almost 100 pending lawsuits for flap complications, etc. Fourth, at Park Avenue Laser Vision are DOCTORS who went to medical school who do your eye tests and CustomVue scans versus the TECHNICIANS at other practices who have not gone to medical school. I kept losing my glasses and never wore contacts. I needed crisp vision to do my work well, drive at night and watch movies or theater. A friend of mine had LASIK done several years ago so I began my research into corrective surgery this summer. Dr. Gee has been performing LASEK since 2001 and is the most experienced in Hawaii with this procedure. His personal technique is designed to have the most comfortable recovery possible. A suction ring gently placed on the eye without pressure to hold the alcohol in place. It only loosening the surface skin and no other tissues. The surface is lightly scored and the gently slid away. The laser ablation is performed and the skin is replaced and allowed to adhere under the contact. This skin acts like a living contact lens. Unlike other videos, this is LASEK not PRK where the skin is removed completely.

1st video blog about my post-operative status. I underwent LASEK (Photorefractive keratectomy/PRK) surgery, as opposed to the popular LASIK surgery. I was not a candidate for LASIK because of my thin-ish corneas and my history with a viral eye infection.
