BKS Iyengar 1938 newsreel Part 1 (SILENT)

To buy DVD dan@balihealer.com. This is a film made by McPetruk in 1938 showing and shows Iyengar demonstrating yoga. Here we see a young Iyengar (still alive, well, and doing yoga, BTW) doing advanced poses that constitute the advanced A & B astanga series. This is obviously well before Iyengar dropped the vinyasa aspect from his practice and rebranded it as "Iyengar Yoga", putting greater emphasis on alignment.

Iyengar & Krishnamacharya's Yoga in 1938

Tirumalai Krishnamacharya was 50 when this film was made and is arguably the most influential yogi in establishing what yoga has become today. His students include Pattabhi Jois the founder of Asthanga yoga, BKS Iyengar, Indra Devi, and his son Desikachar. Most of todays leading yogis have studied under one or more of Krishnamacharya students. Krishnamacharya was born in 1888 in a remote Indian village and lived to be over 100 years old until his death in 1989. He is known as not only as a most influential yoga teacher, but a scholar, and a healer. Krishnamacharya was known to be able to voluntarily stop his visible heart beat/ pulse for over two minutes, probably by drastically reducing venous return to the heart. Try to follow this 48 minute series for your express lunch time yoga workout and see what it does to your heart rate.

Stephanie Quirk on learning from BKS Iyengar

During our stay in Pune, we met with several interesting people, but there is no doubt that Stephanie was one of the most inspiring. Her dedication to the craft of yoga and the service to people in pain was a teaching in generosity and authenticity. So, we thank her for the time and the help she gave us and hope that you will enjoy watching this little video as much as we enjoyed filming it. And to know more about her, here is Stephanie in her own words: "A New Zealander, qualified as a psychiatric nurse in NZ and then moved to Australia to attend Art school graduating in 1982. I encountered and began Iyengar yoga in 1987, in Sydney, Australia. My initial studies were affected by several accidents that left me physically disabled. My only way forward has been to embrace yoga. I made my first journey to the source (RIMYI) in 1991. Inspired by the Iyengar's depth of knowledge and their dynamic presence for their students, I returned to Pune in 1994. I have remained based in Pune since then, consequently have spent many years working directly with the Iyengar's and assisting them in general and therapeutic classes. For me, the practice of yoga goes far beyond being a therapy for my past injuries, it has become every aspect of my life. Since 2002 I have been traveling and teaching on request and invitation in Iyengar Yoga institutes world-wide. Having been in Pune since 1994, I invariably became involved in different projects at the institute in particular in the production ...

Yoga Pose Headstand, BKS Iyengar and Dangers

Yoga pose headstand can be beneficial for some people, however, it can be dangerous for others if precautions are not taken into consideration while performing this yoga pose. It is shocking that Yoga legend BKS Iyengar ill advised yoga practitioners in his book "Light of yoga" to put all the pressure on their head and use arms and shoulder only for balancing purpose in headstand. I would strongly suggest every yoga beginners against this idea of MR Iyengar for many reasons.
