Ten years ago the original idea behind the a HVW8 composition/piece was to pay hommage to someone deserving in their field whether it was musically, such as Miles Davis, Donny Hathaway, Nina Simone, Augutus Pablo; politically, like Shirin Ebadi, Noam Chomsky, Romeo Dallaire; a tribute to other artists, like Malike Sibyde and Mies van der Rohe; or just persons deserving of being called 'heavyweights', like Richard Pryor and David Suzuki. HVW8 would take the iconography and sample it like a jazz standard and freestyle around it, building something to call our own and proud to represent. One of the principle artistic projects of Heavyweight Production House, the Heavyweight Art Installation is made up of Tyler Gibney, G Starship and Dan Bulller. The three artists work in collaboration, not unlike the dynamic that came from past mural jobs, graffiti exploits, art parties and comic jams, to create painted compositions live within club settings and before music audiences. Using the environment as inspiration, the painters instantlly blend ideas onto the canvas, sampled from a rolodex of sketchbook images, Polaroids, old photographs, pop iconography and brush techniques. With each painting taking about 3-4 hours to complete, the process is a challenge of <b>...</b>

adidas Originals presents an Original performance by Mayer Hawthorne and The County at the HVW8 Art + Design Gallery. Mayer Hawthorne is the new school soul sensation who counts his musical influences with the likes of Isaac Hayes, Leroy Hutson, Mike Terry, and Barry White, but draws the most inspiration from the music of Smokey Robinson, Curtis Mayfield, and the legendary songwriting and production trio of Lamont Dozier, Brian Holland, and Eddie Holland Jr. Audience in attendance included various members of LA industry tastemakers and VIP retail accounts. Attendees walked through the front of the gallery and were treated to custom silk-screened tee-shirts courtesy of Hit and Run featuring Mayer Hawthorne and the County, adidas graphics, and artwork by emerging artists. Guests were directed to the back of the building to the parking lot which was transformed into an open air pop up performance venue complete with a stage, white walls and black astro turf. Large-scale artwork from the HVW8 Art Installation was hung on the walls and adidas branded display pedestals showcased adiRise shoes. 20 pairs of adiRise shoes were strung up on a large wire that spanned the width of the stage in alternating grey and white colors, with a massive mural featuring adidas and Mayer Hawthorne on the back wall. The How Original Show by Parra. Dutch artist Parra returns to Los Angeles' HVW8 Art + Design Gallery with The How Original Show. An exhibition consisting of all new work in the form of drawings and paintings, revealing the process of sketch to final piece. Each work is an original, a departure from his well known numbered silkscreen editions. Parra (b.1976) is best known for his curved post-Pop imagery, highly saturated colors, vibrant hand-drawn letters and worlds inhabited by hybrid, surreal characters. Celebrated by galleries and championed by an underground following from the outset, Parra has quickly become a respected and eclectic artist worldwide. Working across drawing, painting, animation and sculpture, Parra creates an enigmatic and instantly recognizable style that defies easy categorization.
