In 1986 British television celebrated its 50th birthday. The Royal Television Society commissioned me to produced a feature length program. Philips had already donated a VidiWall. I was flown to Holland to meet their executives. "How many screens can I have?' "As many as you want," was the replied. Back in London, I calculated that 36 screens on either side of a single giant screen would look good. 36 time two plus one = 72 screens. I must have been mad. Link Electronics came up with an Eiderphor projector and screen and that was that. all I had to do was write a script and go through 50 years of British television history. I worked for three months night and day, viewing thousands of hours, and writing and editing using banks of U-Matic machines. Ten laser discs were required and then the outside screens needed to be programmed to sync with the center screen. No one had ever made an 80 minute VidiWall. This video is, of course, just the center screen. You have to image 36 screens on either side. For example, when you see the transmitter antenna being built, on the other screens is a montage of huge rockets leaving the earth and delivering communication satellites - which explains the sound effect. The television control room center screen has two other control rooms (which you won't see) on either side. The closing sequence of the last night at the proms has the output of the nine BBC cameras on either side. The show ran from nine computer controlled laser discs, in a <b>...</b>
