An intriguing combination of programmers, artists, and philosophers, these creators embrace a process that delegates essential decisions to computers, data sets, or even random variables. This allows important metaphors to arise in their work, calling attention to the relationship between humans and the computers that surround us, the mountains of information we generate, and the powerful impact that technology has on our relationships with each other. generative art from neural networks

Jonathan McCabe's artificially evolved systems art "The patterns are made by repeated foldings, rotations and shifts, and then each point is coloured depending on its positions during the operation. A process of artificial evolution was employed to develop the final images, involving repeated variation, selection and "cross breeding" of the recipes used to generate the images." sf.anu.edu.au

Generative Drums in Pure Data

This is my first (working at least) patch in pure data. Please keep in mind that I don't really know anything about programming, and that this whole thing is thus made up largely of ideas taken from tutorial patches and so on to realize the parts of it I couldn't figure out. Sorry about the sound quality, im recording by running the speaker output into the mic input. Enjoy.

Generative Music - Cellular automata and blip blops

[ UPDATE!! for higher quality sound, watch this here: www.vimeo.com ] This is a sample output of something I've been working on lately. A somewhat intelligent cellular automata system that I developed with some atari2600 style sonification. Poor figure that you see at the beginning triggers a relatively complex cellular life system(which is based on conway's rules but it's not ahistoric and can switch rules on the fly depending on the situation) and I've done some work to sonify the life with atari2600 sounds. I have no control over the system once it is started, and it dies by itself. Software used: Processing connected to SuperCollider via osc_p5 library and the great p5_sc library, and I used the Atari2600 UGen by Fredrik Olofsson, all custom software. It is actually in stereo but Youtube bastardizes the content by converting everything to mono. If anyone is interested in the original, i can send links.

Trope in action ! Generative Audio Video iPhone app from Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers

As a fan of Brian Eno's work and coordinator of the CT-Generative Music project (a CT-Collective project), I cannot miss this application for my iPhone. Trope is a generative music app for iPhone created by Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers. Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers developed "Bloom" together, and "Trope" is very similar to it. It's the same setup, where you tap your finger in different areas of the screen to create sounds that then loop and change over time. Trope uses more drones and pads than Bloom, however, so the music you'll get it quite different and, as the developers say, darker than Bloom. The visuals have also gotten a big bump up, offering much more variation in patterns and colors than Bloom. If you like to explore my on line generative installation go here: www.eterogeneo.com The completely free downloadable CT-Collective project is here: www.ct-collective.com

Genn 2.0 Max/MSP Generative Sequencer

Generative Max/MSP patch ive been making for a couple days now. It's based on the concept of Autechre's aeTM3.3 patch. it still needs a lot of elaboration/organization of effects and such. i just added the effects today which i will have ease more and more into it as the song progresses. hook me some feedback on this because its my third attempt at making a generative sequencer and the first one i put some effort/time into, so i need some constructive criticism. i'm thinking of making counters keep track of what notes, and how many times they play, in the "HighS" synth and making it play different notes based on that to make it sound a little less obviously 95% random. good idea? oh, by the way. 2:20.... gantz graf anyone?

Fireflies: Generative music using Proce55ing and SuperCollider

First attempt at using proce55ing with supercollider. I'm relatively new to both so this was just for fun. A new 'firefly' is created at the cursor postition by clicking, each is subject to an individual randomly generated 'gravity'. Contact with the sides of the screen causes a note to sound; a sine wave on the top and bottom and a pulse on the sides. For contact with the sides, frequency is determined by the y-position and for contact with the top and bottom, it's x-position. Hope it inspires some people to start using these: processing.org supercollider.sourceforge.net

Generative Music in the Blues Scale using AudioCubes and Ableton Operator

AudioCubes (www.percussa.com) are shown in this video with the new free generative music app from Percussa, capable of generating complex melodies, using note intervals from the blues scale. Notes can be sent via MIDI to any compatible hardware or software such as the Operator synth in Ableton Live 8 in this example. By adding cubes melodies can be added on top of each other. Rotate cubes to change number of notes played per bar, and place cubes next to each other to make them add to each other's note intervals to create subtly changing melodies, which will continue to have a time and harmony relationship.

Giant 30x30 LED board with Conway Life, generative music, pong, and sketch mode

We built a giant LED board, about 6.5x6.5 feet, with 900 LEDs using ping-pong balls as diffusers. It can play Conway's Game of Life, Pong, and Sketch mode that allows you to create a starting pattern for Life. We output board state information to a MIDI board that allows us to make music based on what is displayed. This gets interesting with Life, creating minimalist generative music. See pictures here: www.flickr.com Thanks to Evil Mad Scientists for their Peggy 2.0, upon which we based the circuit for our project.

Generative gear cutting with a very simple tool (on a CNC with EMC2)

Here, I demo how generative gear and tooth-rack cutting works on a CNC. This process uses a very simple tool you can make yourself. In effect, it is a "one tooth hobbing". Alas, it requires a CNC with a rotary axis. The process is quite slow (40 minutes per gear shown here) and still needs some refinement. Not shown here, but also doable are diagonal racks (easy task). With a similar cutter, you can could your own Hirth-serrations. Maybe I'll make a video about that too ...

Evolving artificial neural networks with generative encodings inspired by developmental biology

In this dissertation I (Jeff Clune) investigate the difference between generative encodings and direct encodings for evolutionary algorithms. Generative encodings are inspired by developmental biology and were designed, in part, to increase the regularity of synthetically evolved phenotypes. Regularity is an important design principle in both natural organisms and engineered designs. The majority of this dissertation focuses on how the property of regularity enables a generative encoding to outperform direct encoding controls, and whether a bias towards regularity also hurts the performance of the generative encoding on some problems. I also report on whether researchers can bias the types of regularities produced by a generative encoding to accommodate user preferences. Finally, I study the degree to which a generative encoding produces another important design principle, modularity. Several previous studies have shown that generative encodings outperform direct encodings on highly regular problems. However, prior to this dissertation, it was not known how generative encodings compare to direct encodings on problems with different levels of regularity. On three different problems, I show that a generative encoding can exploit intermediate amounts of problem regularity, which enabled the generative encoding to increasingly outperform direct encoding controls as problem regularity increased. This performance gap emerged because the generative encoding produced regular ...

Generative Music - Singularities (Version 2)

I worked on Singularities more today, and added this neat particle/star system. I know Black Holes generally tend to suck things in rather than blow them out, but initially I wanted to do some kind of 'gravity lensing', but this came out, and I like it. Particles are shifted towards red when they accelerate, and larger circles exert a higher force. It's inspired shamelessly by Andre Michelle's "Pulsate", with a few modifications. lab.andre-michelle.com The video is a bit choppy due to my capture software, the actual animation is smooth.

Generative Components Overview - Long version

Get Generative Components Free: bit.ly GenerativeComponents™ (GC) enables architects and engineers to pursue designs and achieve results that were virtually unthinkable before. Empowered by computational methods, the designers can direct their creativity to deliver inspired sustainable buildings that are freer in form and use innovative materials and assemblies. GC facilitates this by allowing the quick exploration of a broad range of "what-if" alternatives for even the most complex buildings. This unique generative design software captures and exploits the critical relationships between design intent and geometry. Designs can be refined by either dynamically modeling and directly manipulating geometry, by applying rules and capturing relationships among building elements, or by defining complex building forms and systems through concisely expressed algorithms. To inform decisions, GC is integrated with Building Information Modeling (BIM), analysis, and simulation software, providing feedback on building materials, assemblies, systems performance, and environmental conditions. This integration also ensures that intent becomes reality by enabling designs to accurately and efficiently flow through to detailed production and fabrication. GenerativeComponents is already enabling leading architects and engineers around the world to deliver inspired sustainable buildings.
