January 28th, 1986 at 11:39am EDT - The Space Shuttle Challenger Explodes on its 10th flight during mission STS-51-L. The explosion occurred 73 seconds after liftoff and was actually the result of rapid deceleration and not combustion of fuel. CNN was the only national news station to broadcast the mission live, so thus what you are witnessing on this video is the only coverage of the disaster as it happened when it did. Approximately 17% of Americans witnessed the launch live, while 85% of Americans heard of the news within 1 hour of the event. According to a study, only 2 other times in history up to that point had news of an event disseminated so fast - the first being the announcement of JFK's assassination in 1963, the second being news spread among students at Kent State regarding the news of FDR's death in 1945. It has been estimated at the time that nearly 48% of 9-13 year olds witnessed the event in their classrooms, as McAuliffe was in the spotlight. The 25th Space Shuttle mission altered the history of manned space exploration and represented the first loss of an American crew during a space mission (Apollo 1 was during a training exercise). Christa McAuliffe was slated to be the first teacher in space for the Teacher in Space Program. As her maximum altitude was ~65000ft (12.31 miles), she never made it to space. That title was given to Barbara Morgan of STS-118 aboard the shuttle Endeavour in August 2007, 22 and a half years after the Challenger Disaster <b>...</b>

The investigation shows that the Solid Rocket Booster field joints were of an insufficiently fault-tolerant design and when the vehicle was launched at below-normal temperatures, hot exhaust gasses leaked on ignition, damaging the integrity of the field joint, leading to a breach in the external tank and destruction of the orbiter.

A news cameraman was despatched to film what SHOULD have been a routine puff piece - reaction shots of the interested parties in the bleachers, at the latest shuttle launch. What he ended up filming was EXTRAORDINARY. As the shuttle exploded, 74 seconds in, those who were familiar with launches knew their relatives and loved ones were DEAD - however, those attending their first launch initially assumed the explosion was merely separation of the vehicle's stages. Thus, as some faces became wreathed with PAIN - others were still in awe at the majesty of it all. But as word of what had ACTUALLY happened began to spread through the crowd like a slow cancer - those faces too became angst-ridden. Meanwhile, the cameraman carried on doing his JOB - scanning the crowd for reaction shots. When his work was aired on the evening news bulletins, it had been cut down to a few seconds of sterile clips - but this is his FULL UNCUT footage. It is followed by a piece, recorded shortly AFTER the disaster, where British media hack Alistair Stewart interviews a young woman named Heather Couper, who was the president of the British Astronomical Association. Experience some sights and sounds of the 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 HEMI Inaugural Edition. I was able to drive it on the same canyon roads that I recently drove the Mustang Shelby GT500 and was shocked at how fast and how great this car handles for being over 600 lbs. heavier than the Shelby. This limited edition 392 IE package will cost about $47000 and features the new 6.4L HEMI engine that is good for 470 horsepower and 470 ft.lbs. of torque. The special interior is very flashy at first but fits perfect with the overall feel of the car...which is in your face awesome but sedate enough to live with every day. Speaking of living with this car, during my grueling commute to work the few days I had this thing, my fuel mileage average was 21 mpg combo which blew me away. Do I want this car, heck yes I do! But this price range has some stiff competitors. The collect-ability factor is very high with this factory hot rod though. Dodge will make less than 1500 of these so you had better get in line pretty quick to own one.

Rare film of the 1986 Challenger explosion, taken by Jeffrey Ault of Orange City, Fla. Jeffrey Ault built a 5-foot tall replica of an Apollo-era Saturn V rocket for an elementary school science project. In high school, when NASA was conducting tests of the space shuttle program, he routinely wrote to the space administration requesting mission reports, collecting them in a file that he still has to this day. So when he had the opportunity to attend the launch of the Challenger space shuttle while visiting Florida in January 1986, he was thrilled. Ault, who was 19 at the time and visiting from southern California, attended the launch with his parents, Bernice and Robert, and his friend Bill Graber. He filmed the event with his Chinon Super 8 film camera while Graber snapped photos. Like many home movies, the film sat untouched in a box in Ault's house for decades. Until last week, it had been 26 years since he had seen the film.
