LE FIACRE - Jean Sablon

A fun song in French from about 1952 or so. About a woman and her gentleman friend, Leon, riding around Paris in a small horse drawn cab, le fiacre, with the curtains pulled down to cover the window (she was married to another man). Her husbands happens to spy them and sets off after the coach but is, alas, run over by the coachman. She turns to Leon and says, excitedly, "Leon! We can leave the curtains up! The coachman has run over my husband!" Sung in French. The introduction is from a 1955 radio program. You can hear the full recorded live radio broadcast of this song here: rtd.cdbpdx.com
Hebrew KOL NIDRI by Joseph Rosenblatt 1912

Here is a song sung in Hebrew by cantor Joseph Rosenblatt c.1912. It is the flip side of his EL MOLE RACHMIN tribute to the sinking of the Titanic. This was recorded while he was engaged by the Congregation Ohab Zedek in New York. I also found this little bit of information online: "In 1927 Warner Brothers offered Rosenblatt $100000 to co-star with Al Jolson in 'The Jazz Singer,' but they could not persuade him to sing Kol Nidrei. He felt that it was much too sacred to be used as entertainment."
Japanese Children's Music - 78 rpm Record c.1950

A departure from the usual postings. I stumbled upon a collection of 60 or so old Japanese 78s and this is one of them. Mostly pop and traditional Japanese music from 1930s-1950s. I do not understand Japanes at all, but some of the music is good and /or interesting. I chose this one because of the label art. Let me know if you want to see more from this collection. You can view the entire collection at: music.cdbpdx.com The rest of the songs can be heard at: music.cdbpdx.com Enjoy!
Japanese Song of the Three Steps Katsutarou Gouta w/Samisen

The following information has been provided by a helpful YouTube member: "The First song is called "Song of the Three Steps" - a famous traditional song dated back from 17th century, and the second one is called "Sa-Do-Okesa", a traditional song from Nigata region. Both of them were sung by Katsutarou Gouta. Accompanied by Samisen, traditonal Japanese string instrument. Judging from the RCA Victor label, and no VE marks, I guess this was recorded before 1927 acoustically, and pressed in United States in early 1930s." Thank you! Sounds good and soothing. You view all the labels from this collection at. music.cdbpdx.com or you can hear all the tunes at. music.cdbpdx.com Enjoy!

SING, SING, SING - Benny Goodman - 9 Minutes! 1937

This is a special recording of the swing classic Sing, Sing, Sing in 2 parts by Benny Goodman on a 12" 78 rpm record. This number usually closed concerts and was their signature tune. Most recordings of Sing, Sing, Sing are 3 minutes or so to fit on a regular record, but this is a real jam session with almost 9 minutes of music, much like their concert performances, showcasing Benny Goodman, Harry James, and especially Gene Krupa. Enjoy!

I CAN'T GET STARTED - Bunny Berigan 1937

This is recorded from a 12 inch 78 rpm record so the song is about 5 minutes long, significantly longer than the 3 minutes or so allowed by the typical 10 inch 78 rpm record. Cool! Bunny Berigan and his orchestra perform I Can't Get Started with Bunny Berigan performing the vocals. Recorded in 1937. The flip side is The Prisoner's Song. Enjoy!
