When you start to practice holding your breath its important to put together a routine whereby you work up to your maximum hold in small steps. Start with half you maximimum breathhold and recover fully between holds. Add ten second each time and make sure you dont strain and remain aware of your body at all times. Its amazing how a warm up like this helps your hold increase. Be aware that you have to be very careful if you use the purging breath up to a breath hold like I do in this video as the lowered level of co2 can cause lack of awareness of your oxygen levels and cause you to black out. Always have someone with you and learn to listen to your body.

The art or breath retention requires the abilty to relax the body and slow the heartbeat and mastery over the air element. In some schools of yoga this art is called Kumbhaka and is used as a key to higher skills. In later videos I hope to show a fill apnea training routine and to denonstrate this art underwater. How long you can hold your breath does depend of a number of factors. People like me who carry quite a bit of muscle will find it very hard to hold their breath for a long time due to the body needing a large amount of oxygen. You will also find that its harder after a meal as your lung capacity is decreased.

Just for added interest,I set up a scope to monitor the heart rate using an audio pickup.It seemed to work ok but the video scanning tends to make the scope look jumpy,but you get the idea.I found that the rate goes up as the CO2 builds up and then goes higher when I finish the holds.I found the vacuum hold gets the rate up higher.

If you use headphones and turn up the bass end ,you can hear my heart beat during the breath hold and see it on the scope.I found from many trys that the heart rate goes up faster and more intense then after a minute or so it slows down by 20% then the contractions start.It beats harder again after getting fresh air at the end of the hold.Please share your experiences on this?

This Guinness World Record comes only three weeks after Stig did the longest dive under ice wearing only speedos and a mask (72 meters/236.22 feet - Guinness World Record). Escape artist Alexanderia the Great is training underwater by lifting weights in this case 25 pounds barbell curls while holding her breath. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. Alex does 2 sets of 15 reps with 25lbs and does 5 extra curls for a total of 35 reps underwater. The stress in lifting underwater simulates the stress she goes through when battling shackles and chains. I do know that you are not supposed to hold your breath when you lift weights but the extreme stress in apnea helps me to better handle breath holds underwater for my escapes.
