Sammy Davis Jr with what I think is the best performance of Mr Bojangles. I have removed my apology for the 'squiggly subtitles' because it seemed to upset a couple of people who thought I was being disrespectful. It was more to point out my lack of understanding of Japanese writing, rather than to criticise it in any way. I am sorry if it caused offence.

Swing Time - Bojangles of Harlem

PLEASE Read this before crying "Racist!": Yes, Fred Astaire is in blackface makeup but it is not meant to be racist at all. This is his tribute to Bill Robinson, also known as Bojangles, whose style influenced Fred Astaire. And Fred Astaire is in no way racist, much of his style of dancing and tap comes from African American influence, and in the movie 'Shall We Dance' he even went completely against the grain and had a dance scene with African Americans. And if you still believe it to be racist and offensive, please understand that it was in no way intended to be racist and I'm sure if Astaire was alive today he would apologize for any ill-feeling. Thank you. Music by Jerome Kern and lyrics by Dorothy Fields.

JERRY JEFF WALKER ~ Mr Bojangles ~.wmv

Jerry Jeff Walker ~ MR BOJANGLES ~ ( JJ Walker). I am dedicating this song to my cousin who is fighting in harms way in Afghanistan. "Mr Bojangles" is a song writtten and recorded in 1968. The song was inspired by an encounter with a street performer in the New Orleans First Precinct jail and refers to neither the famous stage and movie dancer "Bill Bojangles" Robinson nor the New Orleans blues musician Babe Stovall. According to Walker, a murder on the 4th of July weekend in 1965 precipitatied the arrest of all the street people in the area. In the crowded cell, a disheveled homeless man began to talk to Walker, who had been arrested earlier for drunkeness. The man told various stories of his life, but the tone darkened after "Mr Bojangles" recalled his dog who`d been run over. Someone then asked for something to lighten the mood, and the man obliged with a tap dance. Walker mentions that all the men in the cell had nicknames to prevent easy misidentification by the police. The dancer`s name was "Mr Bojangles". In his autobiography, Walker makes it clear that the man he met was white. Walker pointed out, at the time, the jail in New Orleans were segregated by color."

Mr Bojangles ~ David Bromberg w/ vIDeo of New Orleans 75 years old

DAVID BROMBERG: "This is really a true story, you know, a lot of people have heard the song, and... Well, at least, Jerry Jeff tells me it's a true... true story. I played guitar with Jerry Jeff Walker for about two years and we... we did this song every night for two years., and I never got tired of it. Jerry got a little tired of it -- at night, after the clubs would close, we'd do horrible things to it... 'Twas a true story, he... this guy, Bojangles, was a... he was a street dancer in New Orleans, and what he'd do, he'd go from bar to bar and... he'd put money in the juke box, or get somebody else to do it... And then he'd either dance or pantomime the tune. And for that, people would buy him drinks and get him pretty drunk, and then he'd go on to the next bar, and the next one, until it was closing time... and then he'd go on, the next night. After a few nights of this, he'd end up on the corner, and the cops would pick him up and then take him to the drunk tank -- this is where Jerry Jeff met him. Jerry Jeff wasn't there on a research project -- I mean, the way I got that story, I may have that wrong, but the way I got that is that he propositioned the right woman at the right time and the wrong place -- and her husband, the bartender... called the cops, and they took Jerry to the... Parish jail. And he and this guy just talked for three days in the cell about what've you got... " David Bromberg's version of this song is my favorite. Try and listen to the end as the ...

Bill " Bojangles " ROBINSON " The Sand Dance " !!!

RARE OLDIES VIDEO FROM THE FILM " STORMY WEATHER " WITH MR BILL ROBINSON ! Bill Bojangles Robinson (May 25, 1878 November 25, 1949) was an American tap dancer and actor of stage and film. Robinson was born in Richmond, Virginia to Maxwell, a machine-shop worker, and Maria Robinson, a choir singer. He was raised by his grandmother after both parents died when he was an infant—his father from chronic heart disease, and his mother from natural causes. Details of Robinson's early life are known only through legend, much of it perpetuated by Bill Robinson himself. He claims he was christened "Luther"—a name he did not like. He suggested to his younger brother Bill that they should exchange names. When Bill objected, Luther applied his fists, and the exchange was made. At the age of six, Robinson began dancing for a living, appearing as a "hoofer" or song-and-dance man in local beer gardens. He soon dropped out of school to pursue dancing as a career. In 1886, he joined Mayme Remington's troupe in Washington, DC, and toured with them. In 1891, at the age of 12, he joined a traveling company in The South Before the War, and in 1905 worked with George Cooper as a vaudeville team. He gained great success as a nightclub and musical comedy performer, and during the next 25 years became one of the toasts of Broadway. Not until he was 50 did he dance for white audiences, having devoted his early career exclusively to appearances on the black theater circuit. In 1908 in Chicago, he met ...

Nina Simone- Mr Bojangles + Lyrics

Nina Simone- Mr Bojangles + Lyrics I knew a man Bojangles And he danced for you In worn out shoes With silver hair, a ragged shirt And baggy pants, the old soft shoe He jumped so high, he jumped so high Then he lightly touched down I met him in a cell in New Orleans I was down and out He looked at me to be the eyes of age As he spoke right out He talked of life, he talked of life He laughed, and slapped his leg a step Mr. Bojangles, Mr. Bojangles Mr. Bojangles, dance! He said his name, Bojangles then he danced a lick across the cell He grabbed his pants a better stance Oh, he jumped up high he clicked his heels He let go a laugh, he let go a laugh Shook back his clothes all around He danced for those At minstrel shows and county fairs Throughout the south He spoke with tears of 15 years How his dog and he traveled about His dog up and died, he up and died After 20 years he still grieves Mr. Bojangles, Mr. Bojangles Mr. Bojangles, dance! He said I dance now At every chance in honky tonks For drinks and tips But most of the time I spend behind these county bars He said I drinks a bit He shook his head And as he shook his head I heard someone respectfully ask Please Mr. Bojangles, Mr. Bojangles Mr. Bojangles, dance!
