HOWTO: setup a slackline using the 4 carabiner "primitive" method

This shows you how to setup a slackline using two loops slings (tied with water knots in this case), 4 carabiners, 2 forged rappel rings for line-lockers, and 60 feet of webbing. For videos on how to make the slings or use a line-locker, see nwslackline.org

Gibbon Games 2011

Practice session highlights and athlete interviews from the Gibbon Games 2011 in Salt Lake City, Utah. I was honored that Gibbon asked me to be one of the judges of the competition, and had an amazing time hanging out with old friends as well as making some new ones! To everyone I interviewed who I couldn't manage to fit into this video, I apologize — mostly this is due to me not having shot enough supporting footage of you; I guess this means we'll have to slack together again soon so I can publish a sequel.

HOWTO: Rig a 2" wide slackline without a ratchet

Two inch (50mm) wide slacklines are lots of fun for acrobatics and for beginners to build confidence, but many people don't want to use a ratchet. Well, now with 4 carabiners, 2 two-inch inner-diameter forged rappel rings, and 10 feet of one-inch webbing, you can use the trusty "primitive" method!

Slackline water line, Seattle!

A waterline we set up two days in a row at South Lake Union Park in Seattle, WA. See nwslackline.org for the specific beta on location and rigging. Many thanks to everyone who came out and gave it a try, from experienced slackers to a Belgian houseguest who had never once set foot on a line!

Non-forged line-locker on a slackline

Bottom line: do not use line-lockers that aren't forged aluminum or steel; use lockers rated for 20kN (4000+lbs) or better.

Slackline Break Test

Destructively testing the worst possible piece of webbing ever. 1: at least 5 years old, bought from Aron (of Aron's Gap fame) 2: more than one partial cut in it (from my dog chewing on it) 3: horribly sewn loop on one end 4: other end loop made of a basic overhand knot About 1:15 into the video you can see it begin to stretch like crazy. One of the cuts in the webbing almost immediately doubles in size. A word about safety: everything else in the system was rated for 10000+ lbs break strength (with a near-tight spanset backup for when the sling blew). Unfortunately it was INSANELY windy at the beach today, so I apologize for the audio. The video is pretty self explanatory, however.

Triangle slackline

A triangle / n-way / delta / spiderweb slackline howto video. The key points include: 1: Use a center ring that is super strong and rated for multi-directional loads. NOT a carabiner. 2: Tension each line a bit at a time to get an even distribution of tension 3: This might be a good way to start practicing tandem walks as you feel the other person vertically, but not so much in the lateral sense.

HOWTO: make an "eye and eye" slackline sling

This was a request from a nwslackline.org reader. I don't recommend you actually use an eye-and-eye sling, since a big waterknot loop is going to be at most $3-4 more expensive and it will have at least double the strength!

To watch a trailer on our Africa project: kck.st -- We're going to west Africa to film measles inoculations. But we're also planning to slackline a lot, and teach the kids we're meeting, as well as give away a bunch of slackline gear to them, as a way of establishing a genuine connection. So where do you come in? Donate some gear, help support us on our trip by reposting our kickstarter trailer (link above) to your facebook or donating directly, and by checking in with nwslackline.org toward the end of the year to see all sorts of awesome Africa slackline footage.

iOS 4.0 on 3G iPhone (parody)

As a generally happy Apple customer, I bought two 2G iPhones on the first day they hit the market (one for myself and one for my romantic partner at the time). When the 3G came out, I bought that model too. The first iPhone captivated the world because the interface was so well done, so snappy, so interactive; it was like nothing before it. Of course it was, it was an Apple product. That, right there, is why I buy Apple products. And I didn't even mind that it was missing "copy and paste," MMS, ringtones, etc — because I knew Apple would eventually get to these through software updates. And eventually they did. Unfortunately they kept coming out with new phones. With faster processors. And they wrote all their software updates for these phones, with little attention to deprecated models. I don't really use third party software on my phones, I honestly don't even use ringtones. I just use my phone for SMS, web, maps, and occasionally as an actual phone, so the 3G model was more than I ever needed. Except over time, it's fulfilled my needs less and less. And it's not because my needs have grown. It's not because I've installed a bunch of laggy software. It's because Apple's firmware has become bloated, with respect to the processing power of the 3G iPhone. I just installed iOS 4 two weeks ago, and at this point, I'd be happy to roll back to the first firmware I ever had, just to have that original speed again; forget about the copy and paste, I don't need it that badly. MaximsNewsNetwork: UN CITIZEN AMBASSADORS & UN SG BAN KI-MOON (UNTV)

MaximsNewsNetwork: 23 October 2010 -- UNTV: United Nations, New York -- Six young men and women from Nigeria, Russia, Mexico, Australia, Saudi Arabia and the US, winners of the Citizen Ambassadors campaign, visited the United Nations yesterday (22 October), where they met Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and had the opportunity to express their hopes and concerns about the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs); the Citizen Ambassadors received a VIP tour of the organization's headquarters and will be participating in events commemorating the UN's 65th birthday (24 October). Gerardo Mendoza Capetillo, from Mexico, told UNifeed that it is "a privilege" to be elected Citizen Ambassador and said that we are all "part of the same family that is called humanity", emphasising that for his and future generations, we need to "achieve these Millennium Development Goals." The eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) -- which range from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education, all by the target date of 2015 -- form a blueprint agreed to by all the world's countries and all the world's leading development institutions. They have galvanized unprecedented efforts to meet the needs of the worlds poorest. Adam Burtle from the United States said that he is upset when "a child doesn't get a vaccine that costs less than a dollar and then that child dies" adding that "there is no reason that every child in the world doesn't deserve a ...
