Sébastien Ogier has been signed as the first official Volkswagen driver for the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). The 27-year-old Frenchman and his co-driver Julien Ingrassia (31) are joining the Volkswagen Motorsport squad effective immediately. Volkswagen has unveiled the NILS concept in Frankfurt. Developed with the support of the German government, the futuristic EV has xenon headlights, gullwing doors and free-standing 17-inch aluminum wheels. The cabin is minimalistic but features a digital instrument cluster, a portable infotainment system and a single seat for the driver. Power comes from a 5.3 kWh battery which motivates an electric motor with a peak output of 34 PS (25 kW / 34 hp) and 130 Nm (95 lb-ft) of torque. This enables the 460 kg (1015 lb) car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in less than 11 seconds and hit a top speed of 130 km/h (81 mph). The range is just 65 km (40 miles), but Volkswagen says 73.9% of all commuters residing between Berlin and Munich cover less than 25 km (15.5 miles) on their way to work.
