Loughborough (All Saints) has a very nice set of ten bells. But the tenor is hard work, especially when the rope is a bit too short like it was for me (and not my brother who is ringing it in the video). They sound glorious, and I've always found Stedman to be quite musical, especially on higher numbers. Loughborough's ringing chamber has four air-con units in the middle of the room: bliss! And a parrot on the spider... lol For the uninitiated, I'm just going to explain the second part of the method name (in this case, Caters). It describes how many bells are ringing the method, and there is a "technical term" for each number from 3-13. Here we go: 3 - Singles 4 - Minimus 5 - Doubles 6 - Minor 7 - Triples 8 - Major 9 - Caters 10 - Royal 11 - Cinqs 12 - Maximus 13 - Sextuples Some things can be rung on 14 and 16 (where there are enough bells!) but they are just known as, for example, "Yorkshire Surprise Fourteen" (see two videos ago for some ringing on 14). The Metropolitan Cathedral and Basilica of St Chad in Birmingham was built by Pugin between 1839 and 1841, to serve the rapidly expanding Catholic population in Birmingham. It is a beautiful building and takes inspiration from German Gothic for it's long large roof. The first bell was given to the Cathedral in 1840, and was soon after recast into five smaller ones. Augmented to eight in 1877, these bells were replaced by Taylors of Loughborough in 1940, by the superb ring that hangs in the tower today. They hang next to the bell openings, with 3,4 and five on a second tier above the rest. They are not easy to ring well, due to a long draft and tower movement, but certainly reward your effort.

Sunday morning ringing on the grand old twelve of Southwark Cathedral by The Southwark Cathedral Society of Bellringers, established 100 years ago. The Cathedral Church of St Saviour has a heavy ring of 12 bells, which hang in the imposing central tower which stands 163 and a half feet high. The tower was completed in 1528 and has a pair of windows on two tiers on each side and four prominent pinnacles. In 1735 an old ring of eight was recast completely into a heavy ring of twelve by Samuel Knight of Holborn in London, Samuel Knight being a descendent of the Knights who began bellfounding in Reading in the 1500s. The tenor of this ring was 51cwt. Since that date, the 7th and the back three have all had to have been recast at various points. The frame is the original one built to house Knight's new twelve in 1735. Notice that the end of the tenor pit has been carved to widen it to let the bell pass! It was strengthened when the bells were rehung in 1911 and the tenor recast and all new fittings supplied also at this point.
