Sholom Rubashkin is a pillar in his community, a generous man with 10 children, a loving wife and an extended family known for their long-time philanthropy in Iowa and in the Jewish community. For many years, they provided for other families in need and did not seek wealth for themselves. They lived in a very modest Postville house with few, if any, luxuries. Rubashkin, who is 51, was the Vice President of Agriprocessors, Inc., the country's largest kosher meat processing plant where hundreds of men and women were employed. For years, the business was respected as a major contributor to the Iowa economy and to the livestock industry to which his family has contributed for generations. Now, Rubashkin sits in a Cedar Rapids prison cell awaiting sentencing. He was convicted in Federal court in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, of bank fraud relating to Agriprocessors' loan from First Bank Business Capital of St. Louis, and for failure to pay livestock providers in a timely manner. The loan was being paid until ICE conducted a raid on Agriprocessors' premises in May 2008, driving Agriprocessors into bankruptcy. Agriprocessors has been sold and the Rubashkin family is in debt.
