I have seen this video several places, many don't tell the story behind it, and many seem to have it wrong. Operation Credible Sport, also known as Operation Honey Badger, was a United States military operation plan in late 1980 to rescue the hostages held in Iran using C-130 cargo planes modified with rocket engines. The Credible Sport operation was to follow the dramatic failure of Operation Eagle Claw in which a C-130 Hercules and a Sea Stallion helicopter collided in the Iranian desert, killing 8 servicemen. Credible Sport was abandoned after the election of Ronald Reagan as President in November, 1980. The Credible Sport plan called for highly modified C-130 Hercules cargo planes to land in a soccer stadium not far from the American Embassy in Tehran and airlift the hostages out. Three aircraft were modified under a top secret project at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida to YMC-130H configuration with rocket packages blistered onto the forward and aft fuselage, which theoretically enabled the planes to land and take off within the confines of the sports arena. During a demonstration at Duke Field, Eglin Auxiliary Field 3, on October 29, 1980, one of the modified Hercules fired its braking rockets a few seconds early (this seems to be wrong, see note below). The aircraft suffered an extremely heavy landing, tearing off the starboard wing, setting off a fire, and resulting in the airframe, serial 74-1683, being written off. Despite this, the entire crew survived. This ...

2009 Alaska Air show, Experimental STOL competition at Valdez Alaska

This is the Experimental class competition. At the 2009 "May Day" Valdez air show. There were not as many airplanes in this class as there were in 2008 due to the bad weather the previous days before the competition. The scores are what was posted on www.valdezalaska.org (as of 05/23/09) Each person had 2 landings and takeoffs, The best landing and takeoff distances were added together and that was their final score. The temperature was in the mid range. And there was not very much wind, at this point in the day. Check my main page for the other airplane class competitions at the 2009 air show.

Amazing turbine STOL homebuilt airplane

This is Scott Ehni's custom Zenith CH701 airplane (that he scratch-built from plans) powered by the lightweight Garrett JFS 100-13A Turboshaft engine, putting out at least 90 BHP at a prop speed of 3100 rpm, burning about 12 gph. The small APU will work on almost any liquid that will burn. The best off-airport fuel choice is a mix of diesel and unleaded regular gas as it burns a bit cleaner. Valdez airshow Bush class STOL competition 2008 Alaska

This is a no frills presentation of the 2008 Valdez air show (Bush class) with scores as were posted on www.valdezalaska.org I have to apologize for the substandard quality of the film, for some reason I forgot my tripod at home. The four place Supercub is competing in this video. Each person had 2 landings and takeoffs, The best landing and takeoff distances were added together and halved and that was their final score. This video contains the best of the 2 landing/takeoff attempts so as to keep this video under 10 minuets. The weather was very hot that day. And there was not very much wind, just a very small breeze now and then. Check my main page for the other airplane class competitions at the 2008 air show.

Amazing take-off and climb in Zenith STOL bushplane

This is a great demonstration of the Zenith STOL 701 / 750 takeoff and climb performance. Take off is from dirt road and high climb rate keeps on going up thanks to the leading edge wing slats (slots). The beauty of this Sky Jeep airplane is its simplicity, durability and low cost. It has just a 100 HP Rotax engine which runs on car gas and it can land almost anywhere with the big wheels. This bushplane is the ultimate survival tool.
