2012 Mercedes SLK55 AMG unveiled
Mercedes has officially unveiled the 2012 SLK55 AMG, ahead of its debut at Frankfurt Motor Show. Looking decidedly aggressive, the model is distinguished by a new front fascia, aerodynamic side skirts and LED daytime running lights. Out back, there's a rear diffuser, a trunk-mounted spoiler and a four-tailpipe exhaust system. Interior changes are minor, but the cabin is outfitted with AMG sports seats (with AIRSCARF), a revised instrument cluster and brushed aluminum trim. Power comes from a new, naturally-aspirated 5.5-liter V8 engine with 422 PS (310 kW / 416 hp) and 540 Nm (398 lb-ft) of torque. It is connected to an AMG SpeedShift Plus 7G-TRONIC transmission which enables the roadster to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds, before hitting a limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). Additionally, thanks to an engine start/stop system and AMG Cylinder Management, the SLK has an average fuel consumption of 8.5 L/100 km (27.6 mpg US / 33.2 mpg UK). On the handling front, the model has high-performance brakes (which measure 14.2 inches front / 13 inches rear) and a sport-tuned suspension with Torque Vectoring and AMG Direct-Steer. The former system applies the brakes to improve cornering, while the latter system promises "outstanding road feel and sharp handling in all driving situations." If that isn't impressive enough, an optional AMG Handling Package adds stiffer suspension tuning, a locking rear differential and a three-spoke steering wheel with Alcantara inserts <b>...</b>

The Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is a luxury roadster built by the German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz since 1997. The name was chosen to reflect the company's intentions for the car - that it be Sportlich (sporty), Leicht (light), and Kurz (short). There have been two generations of SLK cars from Mercedes-Benz. Like its predecessor, the second generation of the vehicle featured a retractable hardtop. Following the trend initiated by the R170 model, by the time the R171 was released, this had become an increasingly common feature in almost every new convertible introduced in the market, especially in Europe. The SLK was updated in 2004 with a new Formula One-inspired appearance and serious performance; the new model also took design cues from the Mercedes-Benz Vision SLA concept car, presented in 2000. The new R171-platform SLK was again on Car and Driver's Ten Best list for 2005, and it won the Canadian Car of the Year Best New Convertible award. Highlighting its potential appeal to women, New Zealand's Lucire magazine announced it as its 'Car to Be Seen in' for 2005. The current SLK is built in Bremen, Germany. As we predicted earlier this year, the third-generation Mercedes-Benz SLK in AMG trim will be receiving a new heart transplant in the form of a naturally aspirated version of the twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter sledgehammer V-8 making its way into most of the Affalterbach tuner's lineup. We can now reveal that this AMG version of the latest SLK will keep its "SLK55 AMG" title and will deliver a peak output of 422 horsepower at 6800 rpm and 398 pound-feet of torque at 4500 rpm. In case you're wondering, that's a full 62 horsepower more than the outgoing model's 5.4-liter V-8. So when might we see the new Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG? Its world debut is scheduled to take place at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show this September, which means we can expect the new car in showrooms by early next year--at the latest. Without the turbos, the engine, now codenamed M152, weighs in at 412 pounds. Fuel saving features include advanced cylinder deactivation, which will allow it to run on just four cylinders during low load situations, as well as an autonomous stop-start system and direct injection technology. An adjustable exhaust system will also feature, allowing the car to be relatively quiet at pedestrian speeds and a wailing banshee when the throttle is floored. Look out for the debut of the Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG this September in Frankfurt, where a new diesel version of the SLK should also debut.
