The Lady Vanishes: Margaret Lockwood, Michael Redgrave, Paul Lukas (1938 Movie)

DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org The Lady Vanishes is a 1938 British thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock and adapted by Sidney Gilliat and Frank Launder from the 1936 novel The Wheel Spins by Ethel Lina White. It stars Margaret Lockwood, Michael Redgrave, Paul Lukas and Dame May Whitty, and features Cecil Parker, Linden Travers, Naunton Wayne, Basil Radford, Mary Clare, Googie Withers, Catherine Lacey and Sally Stewart. The Lady Vanishes is Hitchcock's penultimate film made in the UK before his move to Hollywood--1939's Jamaica Inn followed it. It was the great success of The Lady Vanishes, after a slump of three films that were not hits, that made it possible for Hitchcock to negotiate a very good deal to work in the States. A remake, also entitled The Lady Vanishes, was made in 1979. In Bandrika, a fictional country in an "uncivilised" region of immediately pre-World War II Central Europe, a motley group of travellers eager to return to England is delayed by an avalanche that has blocked the railway tracks. At night, a folk singer plays a tune al fresco that catches the attention of Miss Froy (May Whitty), an elderly lady who has worked some years abroad as a governess. The folk singer is suddenly silenced--apparently murdered. Among the train's passengers are Gilbert (Michael Redgrave), a young musicologist who has been studying the folk songs of the region, Iris (Margaret Lockwood), a young woman of independent means who has spent a holiday with some ...

POLIWOOD: Sex Slaves for He But Not for Thee, The Perverted Politics of the Redgrave Family

British author Tim Adler's latest book, "House of Redgrave: The Secret Lives of a Theatrical Dynasty", is filled with bombshell revelations about one of Britain's most celebrated acting families. On this week's Poliwood, Roger Simon and Lionel Chetwynd delve into the sordid politics to which Vanessa Redgrave and her brother Corin were dedicated. How did these children of privilege come to think of themselves as leaders of the working class? And why did they embrace the leader of the Workers Revolutionary Party even after he admitted to having "red sex slaves"?

'Bramwell' Season 2 / Episode 8 / Part 2 of 4 * JEMMA REDGRAVE as Dr E Bramwell

From the PBS Masterpiece Theatre series first aired far too many years ago. From Season 2, Episode 8, Part 2. Jemma Redgrave's Dr. Eleanor Bramwell displays many admirable qualities as she struggles to become a physician/surgeon in the male-dominated world of Victorian England, yet her Bramwell also shows some very human foibles, tool, giving the audience a more interesting, credible and sympathetic character. The re-creation of clinical scenes is also quite accurate (and occasionally not for the squeamish!). SYNOPSIS : In the finest tradition of period costume drama, BRAMWELL follows the fortunes of public health heroine Dr. Eleanor Bramwell (JEMMA REDGRAVE) as she takes on the medical establishment in Victorian-era London. Feisty and unconventional, Eleanor fights to take health care out of the dark ages, and the stories depicted in BRAMWELL are based on documented cases from the 1890s. Season 2. In the second season of BRAMWELL, Eleanor finds her private practice failing and faces tough choices ahead in her encounters with a case of spousal abuse, pre-teen prostitution, an outbreak of cholera, and a mysterious aunt with a secret to hide. Along the way, she falls in love with her handsome and charismatic new partner at work, Dr. Finn O'Neill (ANDREW CONNOLLY). CAST : Eleanor Bramwell . . . Jemma Redgrave Robert Bramwell . . . Katharine Hepburn ... Hecuba Vanessa Redgrave ... Andromache Brian Blessed ... Talthybius Alberto Sanz ... Astyanax English translation of the Euripides play by Edith Hamilton Director: Mihalis Kakogiannis (Michael Cacoyannis) note by Gilbert Murray: "Andromache--This character is wonderfully studied. She seems to me to be a woman who has not yet shown much character or perhaps had very intense experience, but is only waiting for sufficiently great trials to become a heroine and a saint. There is still a marked element of conventionality in her description of her life with Hector; but one feels, as she speaks, that she is already past it." "Her character is built up of 'Sophrosyne', of self-restraint and the love of goodness--qualities shich often seem second-rate or even tiresome until they have a sufficiently great field in which to act. Very characteristic is her resolution to make the best, and not the worst, fof her life in Pyrrhus' house, with all its horror of suffering and apparent degradation." "So is the self-conquest by which she deliberately refrains from cursing her child's murderers, for the sake of the last poor remnant of good she can still do to him, in getting him buried. The nobility of such a character depends largely, of course, on the intensity of the feelings conquered."
