Perception is the process of attaining awareness or understanding of the environment by organizing and interpreting sensory information. All perception involves signals in the nervous system, which in turn result from physical stimulation of the sense organs. For example, vision involves light striking the retinas of the eyes, smell is mediated by odor molecules and hearing involves pressure waves. Perception is not the passive receipt of these signals, but can be shaped by learning, memory and expectation.Perception involves these "top-down" effects as well as the "bottom-up" process of processing sensory input.Perception depends on complex functions of the nervous system, but subjectively seems mostly effortless because this processing happens outside conscious awareness.

The majority of the human brain is comprised of a single structure, the neocortex, responsible for a range of cognitive functions, from sensory perception to abstract thought. However, despite this diversity of functions, the neocortex has a simple architecture it is comprised of numerous repeated motifs of a single stereotyped neural circuit. This talk will serve as an introduction to the structure and function of the neocortical circuit, particularly focusing on how it processes sensory input in order to generate cohesive perception of the external world. This will be followed by a description of recent experiments demonstrating how the neocortex can process sensory input in different ways depending on the behavioral state of the animal. Finally, there will be a discussion of how understanding neocortical function will lead to innovations in medicine, computing, and artificial intelligence. The study of neuroscience is devoted to understanding how the brain functions uniformly across members of a species, but a critical question centers on how cognitive processes differ between members of a species, or in an individual under varying environmental conditions. In short, why do some people excel where others falter? This talk introduces two factors that contribute to individual differences in cognition: genes and hormones. Google Tech Talks April, 9 2008 ABSTRACT A long-term goal of Machine Learning research is to solve highy complex "intelligent" tasks, such as visual perception auditory perception, and language understanding. To reach that goal, the ML community must solve two problems: the Deep Learning Problem, and the Partition Function Problem. There is considerable theoretical and empirical evidence that complex tasks, such as invariant object recognition in vision, require "deep" architectures, composed of multiple layers of trainable non-linear modules. The Deep Learning Problem is related to the difficulty of training such deep architectures. Several methods have recently been proposed to train (or pre-train) deep architectures in an unsupervised fashion. Each layer of the deep architecture is composed of an encoder which computes a feature vector from the input, and a decoder which reconstructs the input from the features. A large number of such layers can be stacked and trained sequentially, thereby learning a deep hierarchy of features with increasing levels of abstraction. The training of each layer can be seen as shaping an energy landscape with low valleys around the training samples and high plateaus everywhere else. Forming these high plateaus constitute the so-called Partition Function problem. A particular class of methods for deep energy-based unsupervised learning will be described that solves the Partition Function problem by imposing sparsity constraints on the <b>...</b>

When NASA did this sort of thing, it was an unintentional spinoff, albeit arguably the one that had the greatest impact on mankind, of a 100bn dollar project. NASA still provides this material without copyright. I think a global first is within our reach. Last year I did a 8 hr time-lapse of Jupiter as a proof of concept. www.youtube.com The wider goal was to unify the time-lapse streams from several such scopes (a global project) to create essentially a continuous time-lapse of Jupiter, along with various sites on Earth to really put people in touch with their spinning home and solar system. This would be the first time anything like this has ever been attempted. Personally I think it would be 'FRICKIN AWESOME' if this can be pulled off! The planets align later this year, and I had intended to start garnering support for this some time after Easter 2011 (post DMD2). This is not a trivial project. I'm also not rich enough to fund this one out of my own pockets which is one of the reasons I've been taking donations. Earlier this week I found out about the youtube Nextup program, and that it had a deadline of the end of the week! (27 March I think).
