2011 Nissan Leaf EV - Quick Spin - NRMA DriverSeat

The future is now, friends. In the space of just a few short months we've sampled both ends of the electric car spectrum, and can now say that a world without oil won't be so dull as you might have once thought it would be. The Tesla Roadster we drove a few months back was a revelation; its performance was staggering -- and the LEAF is just as impressive, if not as quick. What these two cars have in common, though, is that they're the stuff of science fact and not fiction. The Mercedes-Benz's F-Cell car, which was touring Australia recently, is great but you can't buy one and won't be able to for a wee while yet. The Tesla, Nissan LEAF and Mitsubishi i-MiEV, on the other hand, are real cars that you can buy and drive now. Well, sort of. The LEAF won't go on-sale here until next year -- pricing is yet to be confirmed but expect it to be up around $60K -- about the same as a top-spec Toyota Prius. Well, before the recent price cut. for the written car review visit www.www.mynrma.com.au

2011 Ssangyong Korando - Quick Spin - NRMA DriverSeat

SsangYong - the Korean vehicle manufacturer - with the odd sounding name has relaunched in Australia. Better known here for its range of peculiar looking vehicles, including such gems as the Stavic and Chairman, SsangYong has just launched its first new model in three years: enter the Korando. Ready to go almost two years ago, the new compact SUV had to cool its heels until a buyer was found for the Korean company. Mahindra, the huge Indian automotive conglomerate, bought a controlling interest of 70 per cent. The wheels started turning again in January this year. "The new Korando is going to be the brand-defining model for SsangYong in Australia," according to SsangYong general manager, Jeff Barber. He claims it's going to make the brand more relevant to the Australian market. That's a big call, although on paper the new Korando looks the goods. The three-model line-up will be exclusively diesel powered via a state-of-the-art 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine, which is Euro 5 emission compliant. Claimed fuel consumption is 6.1-7.3L/100km (combined) depending on the specification. And the Korando will be available with a six-speed automatic - something many of its rivals don't offer. The entry-level S offers prospective SUV buyers a two-wheel drive version (following the current trend) and it's also front-wheel drive. That's new territory for the brand, as all previous models have been rear-wheel drive or 4x4. Make: Ssangyong, Model: Korando, Engine: 2.0 litre in-line four ...

2011 Toyota Yaris Review - NRMA M&S

This is the third generation Yaris and the sharp new body styling is all-new. Toyota will be hoping this new model will put them on the top of the pile in the ultra competitive light car class once again. The YRS we are driving is the mid-spec model in the range and the likely volume seller - the three door auto priced at $17990. Prices start at $14990 for the base model YR manual. The YRS has the larger 1.5 litre engine that develops 80kW of power with a choice of either five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission ($1600 extra). The 1.5 litre is my choice. Spec wise the YRS has cruise control, Bluetooth, a touch screen info system, audio controls on the steering wheel which is finished in leather. That's where the opposition has an advantage though - competition such as the Kia Rio has six-speeds for both. For more information visit www.mynrma.com.au/motoring

Subaru XV NRMA Motoring Car Review

www.mynrma.com.au/motoring - In the XV, Subaru has released a sub-compact SUV that combines class-leading ride, handling, ground clearance and pricing to worry the established players. In the past, the XV has been a cosmetic-enhancements-only variant of the Impreza. Not anymore. The new XV runs a different nose, stands taller, and is a smidgen shorter in the wheelbase, and it's Subaru's first 'proper' model in the growing sub-compact SUV segment. And priced from $28490 (+ORC) it undercuts just about every other all-wheel drive compact SUV on the market (it matches most of the two-wheel drive variants, too). In Europe, there's a choice of three engines (two petrols and one diesel), but here in Australia we're limited to just one, the new-generation 2.0-litre boxer four-cylinder. Shame we don't, and probably won't, get a diesel variant. Mated to this engine is the choice of either a six-speed manual or CVT. And, it obviously gets Subaru's permanent all-wheel drive. Make: Subaru // Model: XV // Category: Compact SUV // Engine: 2.0-litre boxer four-cylinder // Type: Petrol // Power: 110kW @ 6200rpm // Torque: 196Nm @ 4200rpm // Transmission: Six-speed manual OR CVT // Drive: AWD // Fuel Consumption: 7.0-7.3L/100km // Kerb Weight: 1390-1420kg // Safety: five-star ANCAP // Price: From $28490 (+ORC) // More Information:

Range Rover Evoque SD4 NRMA Motoring Car Review

www.mynrma.com.au - The compact SUV segment is literally bursting at the seams with new players, and the flood of new metal into the market doesn't look likely to abate anytime soon. But nothing in this compact SUV segment has quite the same impact as the Range Rover Evoque. It's the car of the moment, but it isn't all about skin-deep looks... here in the back seat there's a surprising amount of room; there's plenty of knee room thanks to the scalloped back of the front seats, and headroom is excellent too -- there's actually more room back here than in a Range Rover Sport You could quite easily seat three people across the back... Around here in the boot, and this car has the cost optional powered tail-gate (very good when you've got a handful of shopping, or it's raining), you get 400 litres of storage space or 1400-odd litres if you drop the 60/40 split-fold rear seats. That's not huge, if, like me you've got two children and need to fit in their seats, prams and bags, etc... the Evoque sets a whole new benchmark in this segment with great design, quality materials, first-rate fit and finish and the solidity you expect from a premium brand... Here in the front the Evoque is a nice comfy place to be and there are and there are plenty of useful cubbies stashed around the place ... but, unlike other Range Rovers, which you tend to sit up in, you sit down inside the Evoque... it feels like a, well, like a sports car up on its tippy toes... The Czech car maker Skoda has been back in Australia for two years now but you would be forgiven for not knowing that. Despite figures of 1000 plus sales a year you don't see many Skodas on the road. What most people don't know is that Skoda is owned by Volkswagen and that most Skodas are built off the underpinnings of the Golf. Take the Octavia RS. It is, principally, a Volkswagen Golf GTI underneath with a Skoda body on top. The core mechanicals and chassis are shared. The car we are testing is the new version of the RS. It comes with the 2.0-litre turbocharged four cylinder engine that was in the previous generation Golf GTI and is available in either a liftback (hatch) or wagon. Honda CR-Z NRMA Motoring Car Review

www.mynrma.com.au/motoring The CR-Z presents an interesting conundrum for Honda fans. It has so many styling cues and details that echo the once mighty CR-X, it's impossible not to make the connection. Yet it's a hybrid. A mild hybrid as Honda speak would have it. It's heritage is difficult to ignore, yet it is firmly focused on the future. Honda hasn't released a genuinely exciting car for some time, yet with the CR-Z they may have finally hit the nail on the head. Sure it's only a 1.5-litre engine, but in entry level guise, that zippy petrol engine is paired to an excellent manual gearbox and a clever electric motor set up that doesn't drive the wheels but rather assists the petrol engine. The CR-Z is a genuine lightweight too, so all the ingredients for an engaging and fun drive are in place. Enjoy our take on the newest Hybrid kid on the block. 2011 Mazda6 - Quick Spin - NRMA DriverSeat

Now into its third generation the Mazda6 was the model that bought Mazda back from the doldrums in 2002 and put the Zoom-Zoom back into the brand. Refreshed in 2010 the Mazda6 copped additional kit and a $600 price reduction for the Classic hatch and sedan. The model line-up is comprehensive, with the entry-level Limited kicking off at $27310 [sedan only], then the Classic $31750 (sedan), $32750 (for the hatch), and $35050 (for the wagon). The range-topping Mazda6 in sedan form is the Luxury at $40905, and in hatch it's the Luxury Sports at $41415. There's a diesel in the line-up, currently only available with a manual transmission and it's the most expensive model priced at $42815 for the Sports Luxury hatch. The 2.5-litre in-line four-cylinder develops 125kW, and is matched to either a six-speed manual transmission or five-speed automatic. It's not the most powerful engine in the class and it lacks an extra gear in the auto compared to the newer opposition, but it's an effective package and its flexibility from low rpm and strength through the mid-range makes it a standout. On-road is where the Mazda6 shines and the recent upgrade gave engineers the opportunity to tweak the chassis and the subsequent improvements in steering, handling and ride, make the Mazda6 the standout in the class.

Toyota FJ Cruiser Car Review Video | NRMA Drivers Seat

Toyota found inspiration in its past for the name and styling of its latest four-wheel drive, the FJ Cruiser. Everyone remembers the Defender-esque FJ40 Series LandCruiser, right? The first FJ40 series was a rugged, no frills, go-anywhere workhorse that spread throughout the bush like wildfire back in the 1970s and '80s. It was instrumental in forging Toyota's enviable reputation for reliability in Australia. The new FJ Cruiser isn't really all that new, having been on sale in the US since 2005. That said, it first saw the light of day as a concept vehicle, built not by Toyota, but Pikes Peak hero Rod Millen, back in 1999. The lack of a right-hand drive version has meant the Australian and Japanese domestic markets have had to wait until now before getting their hands on this back-to-the-future off-roader. Performance There'll only be one model on sale here in Australia, powered by Toyota's 4.0-litre VVT V6 -- which makes 200kW (at 5600rpm) and 380Nm (at 4400rpm) -- matched to a five-speed automatic transmission. Unlike the current Prado, which shares much in common with the new FJ Cruiser in terms of mechanicals, there's no DAT, Crawl or Multi-Terrain System -- Toyota speak for its electronic off-road driving aids. With the FJ Cruiser you get Toyota's tried and proven no-frills 4WD system with low-range and traction control plus a locking rear differential. That should please the purists. With 380Nm of torque there's plenty of punch from the V6 and you don't need to rev ...
