Geschwister Valtonen - An der Donau steht Marika

I've always liked this song, especially this version by the "Geschwister Valtonen" from Finland. They are accompanied by Willy Mattes and his orchestra... The song is about Marika, an Hungarian girl who is waiting at the Danube (Donau) to go to Budapest because she wants to meet the violinist she hears on the radio every night and whom she is crazy about... I don't know if the song was inspired by Marika Rökk, but she was Hungarian and her name was Marika, so I included a slideshow of her... Enjoy

EVA BUSCH - Il ne faut pas briser un rêve

This is in my opinion the best recording of Eva Busch... It is a great song, written by Jean Jal. She is accompanied by the acclaimed Wal-Berg and his orchestra... She sings "Don't destroy your dreams, even if they seem silly"... A song with special meaning at the date of its recording (Oct. 1940). It is such a powerful interpretation that this clip is no slideshow. There is just a pic of Eva and her record. Let her voice tell the story... Tango Notturno - Elena Lauri (1937)

While waiting for a new 78RPM stylus and cartridge for my turntable, I decided to search through my tapes which I haven't played in many years... I found this version of the famous "Tango Notturno", recorded by Danish singer Elena Lauri (1907-1961)who recorded in Germany in the second half of the 1930's. She is best remembered for the song "Träumen von der Südsee". Slideshow of Pola Negri. All images from personal collection. Enjoy!

Zarah Leander - Einmal kommt die Liebe (Michael Jary 1960)

This is one of my favourite songs of Zarah Leander's later period... A great composition by Michael Jary, allegedly one of Zarah's great loves, unites drama, a great rhythm and the atmosphere of a smoky nightclub somewhere in South America... Of course the song is about love and Zarah Leander promises that "one day love will come". Some of my favourite pictures of Zarah Leander. Enjoy! All pictures/images from personal collection.

Rudi Schuricke - Schön ist die Zeit der jungen Liebe

This song is originally from the movie "Die grosse Nummer (The big attraction)" from 1942 where it was sung by Traute Rose. This version by Rudi Schüricke is very elaborate, sounding like a big musical number from a movie. However it was recorded for German radio in 1943. Enjoy! Adieu Zarah....Fenster meines Lebens...(last recording session 1977)

This is the last video of this Zarah Leander cycle... The song is "Fenster meines Lebens" or "The window on my life" in which she looks back on her illustruous life... It could be seen as her version of "Je ne regrette rien". It was recorded in 1977 in Stockholm and this was her last recording session. The voice is still strong yet it sounds more fragile (as her health was deteriorating). The video opens with a newspaper clipping announcing her death from a Belgian paper and ends with a picture from the very beginning of her career in Scandinavia... Enjoy! Eva Busch recorded the 2 Tchaikovsky compositions sung by Zarah Leander in "Es war eine rauschende Ballnacht". Illusion (Franz Grothe) : Ufa Divas revisited...

Franz Grothe wrote the valse lente "Illusion" for the 1941 melodrama of the same title starring Brigitte Horney and Johannes Heesters... An unusual movie(for that period) about a famous actress, who in the end choses her career over the man she has fallen in love with... This recording is a recent one, and although some may be disappointed, I chose to upload this version over the 78RPM version I have as well. The simple reason is that by doing so the composition is presented in its full length. It is a trip into the past... presenting photographs of female UFA stars from my personal archive : some famous, some notorious and some utterly forgotten. Virgo rules our *daily health routines and overall digestive health along with the solar plexus area, our work routine, paying attention to details, organizational skills, the need for perfection, bringing everything together and establishing a good routine. When we have a Full Moon the things that are not working well are usually the things that come to the surface for our attention. This causes discord and stress which everyone sees at the Full Moon as overly emotional behavior. Let's use this energy to help.

A song from the musical comedy "Axel an der Himmelstür" (Axel at heaven's gates) composed by Ralph Benatzky. It premiered in Vienna in 1936 and made Zarah Leander famous outside Scandinavia. In fact she was somewhat of an overnight sensation as her deep voice was considered very novel in a country used to classical operetta... "Kinostar" became the most famous song the others being "Eine frau von heut'" and "Gebundene Hände". Evelyn Künneke - Haben Sie schon mal im Dunkeln geküsst?

The commercial recording of "Junger Mann" from the musical "Karneval der Liebe" became known as "Haben Sie schon mal im Dunkeln geküsst?", sung by Evelyn Künneke (1921-2001). The song is quite naughty with Evelyn explaining the delights of kissing in the dark... She was the daughter of composer Eduard Künneke and became known to a larger audience when she recorded "Sing Nachtigall sing" (Sing nightingale sing), a melancholic love song written by Michael Jary in 1941. She was featured as a singer/dancer in "Karneval der Liebe". As mentioned the music was considered very "American" and "swing" and this can clearly be heard in her interpreation. Evelyn's big time came after the war however, when she recorded many Michael Jary compositions... All pictures/images from personal collection. See video response (Dorit Kreysler/J. Zarah Leander- Servus, sagt die schöne Stadt der Lieder(1952)

A rather dramatic post-war recording which in translation means something like "Goodbye, says the beautiful city of songs". The city in the song says goodbye to the singer and she will have to say goodbye to her loved one... You will notice how Zarah Leander's voice is transitioning into a lower register and slowly becoming more masculine... (Compare it to songs from the 1950 movie "Gabriela" or even "Cuba Cabana").
