Béla Károlyi - WHAT

Béla Károlyi and his elegant English a big thanks to Béla for being a good sport about this and reminding us YOU CAN DO IT just in case you were wondering what Nastia was really saying in Russian, it was something to the effect of: (asked what it takes to be a champion) - "it is no secret, all you have to do is train hard, that's it"

The Karolyi Six Pack

Footage from the 1989 US Olympic Festival (aka the Junior National Championships) in Oklahoma City - featuring the six talented juniors known at the time as the Karolyi Six Pack: Hilary Grivich, Kelly Pitzen, Amy Scherr, Erica Stokes, Amanda Uherek, and Kim Zmeskal. I made this to show how talented they were as youngsters, and also to wish them well in life...I hope they can look back and remember the good times and appreciate their talent and achievements in gymnastics. And remember Hilary Grivich, who was tragically killed in a car accident at age 19. Rest in peace, Hilary. Music: "Forever Young" by Rod Stewart.

Julian von Károlyi: Chopin études op. 10 no.12, op.25 nos. 1, 2, 4, 6, 7

When Julian von Károlyi (born Károlyi Gyula) got up each morning, before getting out of bed he probably raised his hands in front of his eyes and exclaimed, "Good morning, fingers! And how are my ten little best friends today?" He seemed to revel in what his hands could do at the piano. He never met a vivace he did not think should be sped by 15%, and never let slow passages lose momentum, preferring to keep things moving along, sometimes increasing the tempo for a short section (notes 3-6 in the c# minor op. 25 no.6). Károlyi had a great pianissimo, but projected melodies with passionate declamation, as in the same c# etude, an approach that recalls his teacher Cortot (he also studied with Max Pauer and Dohnanyi). Some may object, for example, to his strong, seemingly rushed and "unfeeling" RH accompanimental eighth notes in the c# min. Yet if the listener can accept the context Károlyi has set, they work. Best of all, he can always be counted on to be thoroughly original, and served by total musical and technical mastery. Though he was not always note-perfect, he came close enough; his double thirds étude is not quite (but almost!) squeaky clean, and lightning fast. It is impossible to listen to Károlyi's playing without thinking, "This is a master." Quite unbelievable that such a pianist, and a widely-touring pianist, is now almost completely forgotten less than twenty years after his death at Munich in 1993. Not just a great player, or a virtuoso, but a master, even ...
Julian von Károlyi - Liszt: Hungarian Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra

Julian von Károlyi plays Liszt's Fantasy on Hungarian Folksongs for Piano and Orchestra. Edmund Nick conducts the Münchner Philharmoniker. This comes from an old DGG-LP and has been slightly declicked and remastered. Károlyi was a great pianist, a virtuoso with warm but cristal-clear sound and flawless technique.

Life is - short film by Katalin Karolyi

Happiness depends on how we interpret outside events and control inner experience. We are so often missing from our own lives, living most of our days like robots. Life becomes too often a mere routine. Is there a way to wake up from this lifeless life and ultimately achieve happiness within ourselves regardless of external circumstances? Liszt - Gnomenreigen Etude - Julian von Károlyi

Great and underrated old school pianist: Julian von Károlyi. JvK was born in 1914 in Losonc/Hungary and studied with Pembauer, Pauer, Cortot and von Dohnanyi. JvK started performing in public in 1926. He was a superb virtuoso who played with greatest accuracy. This recording of Liszt difficult Gnomenreigen Etude displays all of JvK's best qualities: impeccable technique, beautiful sound, elegant interpretation.
