It was fast, comfortable and surprisingly competent through turns, but of course, that was the top-of-the-line supercharged model. For 2010, the Jaguar XF gets a pair of all-new 5.0-liter V8s: one normally aspirated in the XF Premium, the other supercharged in the new XFR. We'll test an XFR soon, but today Inside Line is the first to take the new non-supercharged 5.0-liter-powered 2010 Jaguar XF Premium to the test track. Rated at 385 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque it's not quite as powerful as the former 4.2-liter supercharged V8, but it's close. To see just how close, we brought back a 2009 BMW 550i to see how the new Jag stacks up when it's not getting help from a supercharger. Given that the BMW is giving up 25 hp and 20 lb-ft of torque, we expected a close contest - and got one.

The car -- powered by the all-new AJ-V8 Gen III engine -- beat Jaguar's previous speed record of 217.1mph (349.4 km/h) set in the XJ220 in 1992.* Paul Gentilozzi -- the owner of Rocketsports Racing who successfully led the Jaguar XKR to five series victories between 2001 and 2006 in the Trans Am series in the USA -- drove the car on the record-breaking run. Running solo in a new shade of silver, this high-performance version of the standard XF sedan is designed to give Jaguar a true super sedan to compete with the likes of the BMW M5 and the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. This latest XF-R prototype wears many of the same upgrades as the earlier test mules. The deeper airdam up front is the most obvious upgrade, as the air intakes appear slightly larger than those on the standard model. It also looks like a pair of hood intakes have been added as well. There are new, more aggressive rocker-sill extensions as well, although the wheels appear to be the same set of optional 20-inch items available for the standard XF. In back, a set of quad tailpipes is another obvious tip-off to this XF's high-performance engine hardware. So what's under the hood? All indications point toward a new supercharged 5.0-liter V8. It's an all-new engine that will filter down to the entire Jaguar lineup in one form or another, not to mention Land Rover's upcoming SUVs. In the XF-R, it will likely produce around 500 horsepower, a number that will put it right in line with the rest of the luxury super-sedan crowd. Expect to see the official debut of the 2010 Jaguar XF-R early next year, with sales beginning by the spring of 2009.
