Here's a video of the FT-86 II Concept put out by Polyphony Digital for the Gran Turismo 5 video game. Back in 2009 the original FT-86 concept was prominently featured in the PlayStation3 video game. Now it shows the updated FT-86 II in action but, well, it isn't live action. This video is obviously created by CGI (just check out the fake smoke on those drifts) and the end credits show the Gran Turismo video game logo. And it feels like video gaming will be the only way one will ever get to drive this car. The FT-86 concept has been around a long time and the lack of details (as in what will be the power plant) and real material beyond the nice pictures of a stand-still model is getting a little tiring. The rear-wheel drive FT-86 should debut soon, though. Likely, later this year or in early 2012. But by then its introduction may just be underwhelming.

Toyota has revealed photos of the second iteration of its FT-86 Concept car that is said to be very close to the actual production version due to go on sale in 2012. The Geneva Motor Show FT-86 II features several styling differences over the original concept shown at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show. First off, Toyota's designers restyled the coupe's profile by eliminating the lower swoop line and adding a new beltline that starts from the front wheel arch with a cheesy air vent and finishes off on the tip of the rear window, which itself has grown in size. In addition, Toyota also split the front window and abolished the blacked out A-Column finish, while the rear wheel arches are more pronounced and there are new side rocker panels. At the front end there's a new bumper with a larger center grille and more concave surfaces on both corners, while Toyota also threw in a pair of gaudy looking LED daytime running lights. Finally, Toyota revamped the FT-86's rear end with new standalone, protruding tail lamps and a different treatment for the bumper that houses a more pronounced diffuser and large tail pipes on either side. The re-sculptured boot lid and the fitment of a fixed wing round off the styling changes. The sleek 2+2 uses a Subaru developed rear-wheel drive chassis and boxer engine and will be built at Subaru's Gunma factory in Japan. Christened the FT-86 II in reference to the fact that this is the second evolution of the concept, first shown back in 2009, the car gets revised detailing front and rear, particularly around the front bumper and lights. It also gets a new bronzed paint job. The full production version is expected to make its debut, almost unchanged at Japan's Tokyo Motor Show in December. Under the bonnet, there's a 2-litre flat-four offering around 200bhp, while the car is expected to offer drivers a choice between six-speed manual, and six-speed automatic gearboxes. The concept has a 2570mm wheelbase and measures 4235mm in length. It's also 1795mm wide and 1270mm high - making it about the same size as a Volkswagen Scirocco. While Toyota is remaining tight lipped about it's exact plans for the model, a spokesperson did tell us that the car will be "lively, and offer accessible performance that is easy to harness and enjoy." Believe it or not, we've now seen the Toyota FT-86 in some form or another on five different occasions now -- and it's still a concept. The original car was unveiled at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, we saw the FT-86 II this year at the Geneva Motor Show, along with the chassis and powertrain of its Subaru counterpart, we then saw the Scion interpretation at the New York Auto Show, and finally, a slightly revised version of the car is on display here in Frankfurt. Can we please just drive the thing already? By the time it gets to market, it's going to arrive with a mid-cycle refresh! Toyota says that the car on display here at the Frankfurt Messe is "lighter, faster and sportier" than the concept cars that came before it, but aside from the new orange paint job, the only noticeable difference we can see are a pair of red Brembo brake calipers behind those alloy wheels. Nifty.

It marks a return to the passion for driving that has inspired great Toyota cars of the past, starting with the legendary 2000 GT in the 1960s. With its long, low bonnet, high wings and rear-set cabin, the Toyota FT-86 II Concept pays homage to Toyota's sports car history and is an entirely driver-oriented concept. It was created at Toyota's European design studio ED2, where its styling was dubbed 'functional beauty': its bold, sweeping form has been generated purely according to the constraints of function and aerodynamics. The low, highly aerodynamic bodyshell is stretched tight over the engineering hard points, with the muscular bodywork rendered as compact as possible. The concept measures 4235mm long, 1795mm wide and 1270mm high, with a long, 2570mm wheelbase. Rather than using a heavy, large displacement powertrain to secure performance, the FT-86 II returns to Toyota's sporting roots by combining a free-revving boxer petrol engine with a compact and lightweight six-speed manual transmission and a low centre of gravity to achieve the best possible power to weight ratio.
