We finally had a chance to test drive the 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Coupe. The MSRP starts at $63K and even at that price you get a ton of bang for your buck. It's a matter of practical science. Of course, there's a sizable price difference between the $59995 CTS-V and the $86675 M5, and we don't want to get our comparison results skewed by mere money. Maybe we should add the 507-hp 2009 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG to our science project. Trouble is, this Merc's $86875 price tag still doesn't put the CTS-V under any pressure. We had a better idea. We opted for the more nimble 2009 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG. This compact sedan cranks out only 451 hp, but it weighs almost 400 pounds less than the E63, and its base price of $58075 rings up about $2000 cheaper than the CTS-V. Cadillac's CTS-V is a musclebound powerhouse of a car, offered in coupe, sedan, and--in our case--wagon form. This is one of those 'Holy Grail' cars for enthusiasts, a car that looks great, sounds like the end of the world, and offers nuclear-level performance while carting its occupants around in a roomy, well-appointed cabin. In short, on paper it looks perfect, especially for a wagon enthusiast like myself. And it looks great in person, too. Our test car's silver coat was offset beautifully by the optional wheels in glossy black, and brake calipers in a shade of yellow that looks like it came off a Lamborghini. The near-exotic feel was capped by the optional suede on the steering wheel and the shift lever. On the road, the CTS-V didn't quite feel the way I was hoping it would. I'd hoped, despite the insanity of the supercharged LS3 (556 hp, 551 lb-ft of torque) that propels the wagon from 0-60 in around 4 seconds flat, that the car would dance a little bit. It doesn't, really...it simply looks for the next available stretch of highway on which it can further stupefy its driver with its ability to melt great distances down to nothing. And that really isn't the car's fault. At Despite its great lap times and well-sorted development, there is simply a limit to what a car of this size, weight (over 4300lb), and power level can do for this amount of money. Starting at around $63400, the CTS-V wagon offers the performance (and size, and imposing presence) of a $90000 M5 for <b>...</b>

DETROIT -- Cadillac will offer this spring a Black Diamond Edition of the high-performance CTS-V that comes with a host of popular performance options and an exclusive tri-coat paint, also called "Black Diamond." The Black Diamond Edition, available in the CTS-V Sedan, Coupe and Wagon models, will be the first use by an automaker of JDSU's proprietary SpectraFlair pigment in North America. JDSU, a Milipitas, Calif.,-based optical technology firm, specializes in cutting-edge color solutions for a wide range of markets. Its pigments are used in certain DuPont paints supplied to Cadillac. In the CTS-V Black Diamond, a dark tri-coat paint is embedded with SpectraFlair Bright Silver pigment. While other luxury makers offer metallic paints, Black Diamond is created through a meticulous process that gives the paint added dimension. Instead of simply containing small bits of metal, the SpectraFlair pigment in Black Diamond uses aluminum flakes encapsulated in a glass-like substance called magnesium fluoride. The result is a paint that has a diamond-like sparkle as light hits the surface from different angles. "The CTS-V Black Diamond Edition is like a finely crafted, tailored tuxedo," said Michelle Killen, Cadillac exterior paint designer. "The base color may be a simple black, but the details and richness of the material set it apart."
