Beloved Founder of The Companions of The Cross, Fr. Robert (Bob) Bedard went home to The Lord at 10:17pm on Oct.6th, the vigil to The Feast of Our Lady, Queen of The Most Holy Rosary. These are the concluding moments of Fr. Bob's Funeral Mass celebrated by Archbishop Terrence Prendergast at Notre Dame Basilica in Ottawa on Weds, Oct.12 2011... It was a grand event, a beautiful and joyful liturgy - the readings, the music, Fr. Scott's eulogy, everything form start to finish. It was a celebration of triumph in Christ and His CROSS -a strong affirmation to our faith and life in THE CROSS we share with Jesus and each other in our collective journey as the earthly pilgrims of Christ's Church, particularily here, in Ottawa, where Fr. Bob labored and laid down his life. The Church was packed to capacity and there was an overwhelming sense of us all present being united in CHRIST'S ONE SPIRIT OF LOVE on one same faith journey in Christ to our everlasting homeland. Even in death Fr. Bob was shepherding us, evangelizing, inspiring, affirming and fathering us. FR. ROBERT J. BEDARD, CC Passed away peacefully surrounded by the prayers and presence of the Companions of the Cross, Servants of the Cross and friends at Carlingview Manor on October 6, 2011 in his 83rd year. Fr. Bob was born in Ottawa on July 17, 1929, attending primary school at Corpus Christi and high school at St. Patrick's College, graduating in 1948. He attended St. Augustine's Seminary in Toronto from 1951-55 and was ordained to the priesthood June 6, 1955 at his home parish of Blessed Sacrament. His first parish assignment was at Assumption Parish in Vanier from July 1955 until September 1958. His first teaching assignment was at St. Pius X Preparatory Seminary in 1958. He was made the principal there in 1961 and continued teaching at St. Pius X High School for twenty years. Fr. Bob was appointed official Ottawa Archdiocesan Liaison to the Charismatic Renewal by then Archbishop Plourde from 1975-78. He founded the Ottawa Renewal Centre and launched the Lamplighter newsletter from 1982-84. He spoke at many conferences on topics such as parish renewal and the Blessed Virgin Mary from 1982-84. In the fall of 1984 he was appointed pastor of St. Mary's Parish, Ottawa. In May of 1985 he founded the Companions of the Cross, a community of priests and seminarians. The Companions were established as a Society of Apostolic Life by decree of then Archbishop Marcel Gervais in May 2003. In May of 1990, Fr. He has a strong passion for the light and authenticity of a subject. Before he begins each painting he does extensive research in order to create a solid foundation. Each time he aims for a masterpiece. One of his most powerful paintings is called "Brother's Keeper, 1856," it tells the story of James Kirkwood, an eleven-year-old convert from Scotland who struggled across the frozen prairie with his brothers and widowed mother. While his mother attended to her crippled son and the handcart, James was responsible for his four-year-old brother, Joseph. A snowstorm with icy winds strung out the caravan of beleaguered saints. James carried his brother Joseph through rivers of ice, mud, and snow. Ascending the last miles up Rocky Ridge with little Joseph on his back, James arrived late at Rock Creek camp. Here, James Kirkwood succumbed to the extreme exposure of the day and breathed his last for the love of his little brother. He was buried in a common grave with thirteen others who perished that night. Little Joseph eventually made it into the Salt Lake Valley and went on to become a beloved Mormon Bishop of a large and grateful Salt Lake ward.
