One Potato, Two Potato (1957) - extract

This film is available to buy as part of the BFI's 'Free Cinema' DVD - filmstore.bfi.org.uk Filmed over a 12-month period, this study of children's games played in London streets and playgrounds stands out for its freshness and spontaneity; it remains an important companion piece to Peter and Iona Opie's classic studies of children's games and rhymes. Director Leslie Daiken demonstrates considerable skill and understanding in the way he captures the children, whose games range from the repetitive tongue-twisters chanted by the girls to a small boy trailing a stick along iron railings. Made over a decade after the end of the war, the film also stands as a record of the bomb sites that pockmarked London and provided many urban children with a place to play. An Otter Study (1912)

Watching this recently unearthed treasure is all the more amazing when you realise the footage itself was shot as long ago as 1912. The surviving version of the film you see here was re-edited in the 1920s and titled The Otter, with a final hunting scene removed. Intertitles tell us all about the habits of this fascinating creature, alongside the first known shots of an otter swimming underwater. We even get to see the cameramen setting up their special tank in the river for filming these scenes. Just think otter fans -- this furry fellow is almost a century old! Tibetan Scenes (1945) - extract

Highlights from the BFI National Archive's extensive collection of films shot in Tibet prior to the Chinese occupation can now be seen in the BBC/BFI co-production, 'The Lost World of Tibet' (2008). Featuring a potent interview with the Dalai Lama an extended version the documentary is available to buy on DVD from the BFI Filmstore - filmstore.bfi.org.uk Tibetan Scenes was made by Tsien-Lien Shen in the early 1940s - he was resident Chinese Commissioner in Lhasa from 1942-47. The colour film records many of the ceremonial events that took place in Lhasa, including the New Year ceremonies, and Shen himself appears in the film. There is also evidence of the presence of the Chinese in Lhasa. Although the majority of the film focuses on Tibetan ceremonies, there are some invaluable scenes capturing everyday life in Lhasa, as monks, porters, market stall sellers and the occasional yak compete for space. (Jan Faull) You can now watch over 20 hours of films made in Tibet between 1922 and 1949 in the Mediatheque at BFI Southbank. These include the films of plant hunter and botanist George Sherriff (his love of nature is reflected in the remarkable jewel-like colours of his films); Frederick Bailey: Political Agent, butterfly collector and spy and remarkable footage of Mallory and Irvine's ill-fated attempt to conquer Everest. www.bfi.org.uk

Victorian women demonstrate their slalom cycling skills. The precision of the women skilfully negotiating their way around a line of bollards is quite remarkable. Petticoat Lane (1903)

This fascinating film provides an authentic view of London's East End from over a hundred years ago. Flat-capped men flow in a Sunday morning tide down Middlesex Street - better known by its unofficial name, Petticoat Lane - just as they have for generations. This most Cockney of London markets caters to the second clothes trade: at the time when this film was made, the market was dominated by the East End street sellers and the Jewish rag trade (almost all the names on the shop fronts are Jewish). As the camera pans across the market, we see the traders raised above the general level, barking at the crowd. The few women in the picture are stall-holders, selling patched-up trousers and restored boots, while a nearby card sharp tempts the punters. Earliest Dickens film - The Death of Poor Joe (1901)

www.bfi.org.uk This recent rediscovery is believed to be the earliest surviving film inspired by the work of Charles Dickens, in this case the character of Jo the crossing sweep from 'Bleak House'. 'The Death of Poor Joe' was almost certainly made by pioneer filmmaker GA Smith and predates his 1901 adaptation of 'A Christmas Carol', 'Scrooge, or Marley's Ghost' - www.youtube.com

Springtime in an English Village (1944)

Unseen for years due to the fragility of the materials, 'Springtime in an English Village' offers an extraordinary and unexpected snapshot of rural life in wartime. After a fairly predictable opening - farmers ploughing fields, cute baby animals gambolling - it finally gets down to business. The film is about that most ancient of English traditions: the selection and crowning of the Queen of the May. But what is so surprising is that 60 years ago the village of Stanion in Northamptonshire chose to honour a young black girl - apparently the daughter of an African merchant seaman who had been evacuated there during the War. It's hard to know quite how literally to take the proceedings. The film was made by the Colonial Film Unit for the purpose of screening throughout Britain's African and Caribbean colonies - to demonstrate 'typical' life in the UK - at a time when the government needed to recruit the support of men and women from across the Empire. Later, in the immediate post-War period, such films not only acted to reinforce imperial solidarity, but formed part of a propaganda campaign to attract cheap labour to the UK. Flying the Foam and Some Fancy Diving (1906)

Self-styled pier entertainer 'Professor' Reddish was a specialist in the "flying the foam" stunt, which involved mounting a bicycle and riding it down a steep ramp and then off the end of Brighton's West Pier into the sea. To this, director James Williamson adds additional layers of entertainment, firstly by showing the stunt from multiple angles (or rather several stunts, as the surrounding crowds differ from shot to shot) and then by showing it in reverse motion so that Reddish appears to be performing the impossible feat of riding his bicycle vertically out of the sea. Similar treatment is then given to more conventional footage of pier divers. Reddish's foam-flying stunts were clearly a regular attraction, as local photographer George Ruff Jr. took a picture dated 17 June 1904 that could easily have doubled as a still from Williamson's film, but which was presumably not shot at the same time, as no cameras are visible. Beautifully shot, gritty, thought-provoking and realistic, this Hindi film gives a more moving, deep and down-to-earth portrayal of life in India's slums than the entertaining but romanticised perspective taken by Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire. Scrooge, or Marley's Ghost (1901)

For more on the BFI's Dickens on Screen project see www.bfi.org.uk Produced by the English movie pioneer RW Paul, this version of 'A Christmas Carol' was thought to be the earliest surviving adaptation of Dickens' work on film, before the discovery of 'The Death of Poor Joe' - youtu.be The only known print, held by the BFI, is incomplete, but manages to tell enough of the story for it to be recognisable. This early cinematic excursion into Dickens' most popular tale was an ambitious undertaking at the time. Not only did it attempt to tell an 80 page story in five minutes, but it featured impressive trick effects, superimposing Marley's face over the door knocker and the scenes from his youth over a black curtain in Scrooge's bedroom. Charles Dickens and the Magic Lantern

The earliest films might not have been made until the mid 1890s but that didn't stop people in Victorian Britain enjoying all sorts of visual spectacles and wonders, created using lights, smoke, mirrors - and plenty of imagination. Beer from Coal (1959)

For more information on 'King Coal', a major exploration of Britain's coal mining industry as seen on film, visit www.bfi.org.uk Taken from 'Mining Review 12th Year No.10', this lovely story shows how coal, rather spuriously, contributes to the brewing of beer, featuring some gorgeous shots inside the Charrington Brewery in the Mile End Road. Huge Lancashire boilers use 150 tons of coal a day to heat the coppers and various washing machines for casks and bottles. There is a remarkable shot inside the fermenting vats, with the differing foam formations resembling lunar landscapes. Anthropomorphised beer bottles are vividly described as jostling each other like the crowd trying to get to the bar at the cup final.
