Pygmalion 1938 - "Not bloody likely - I'm going in a taxi"

It must have been shocking to hear the b word in the more respectable era of the 1930s. Leslie Howard is quite sinister and misanthropic in this movie and Wendy Hiller is hilarious as the cockney girl trying to become a lady. This is the classic speech where she tries to sound posh but just ends up using a posh voice and common vocabulary to regale the vicar's tea party with tales of her dissolute family life: "It was them who pinched it what done her in"...

Walt Disney - Ferdinand The Bull - 1938

This Oscar-winning short tells of a bull who preferred to sit under trees and smell flowers to clashing horns with his fellow animals. As luck would have it, an untimely bee reveals Ferdinand's ferocious side via pained howls and wild stomping. This lands him in the bull-fighting arena amidst characters based on Walt's animators with a matador reportedly modeled after Walt himself.

Delhi (1938)

Shot by the legendary Jack Cardiff - the Oscar-winning cinematographer of 'Black Narcissus' - this is one of a number of short films that he made in India in the late 1930s. As much a study to show off his brilliant Technicolor photography as it is a portrait of Delhi, this film presents the city - and the period - as rarely seen before. After a brief historical and architectural preamble, the film moves into an extended sequence that shows the Jama Masjid and stunningly coloured saris among the gardens of the Red Fort. Then it's off to New Delhi to see how the British (in the form of architect Edwin Lutyens) 'taught the Indians' how to build... However, despite the colonial pomposity of the commentary, the record of New Delhi in the '30s is extraordinary - especially the scenes of Connaught Place that appear as a sea of calm and green lawns. (Robin Baker) This film is part of 'Before Midnight' - a touring programme of 27 films shot in India prior to Independence. Fieseler Fi 156 Storch demo 1938

In 1935, the RLM (Reichsluftfahrtministerium, Reich Aviation Ministry) put out a tender for a new Luftwaffe aircraft (suitable for liaison, army co-operation today called Forward Air Control), and medical evacuation, as required to several companies. Penned by chief designer Reinhold Mews and technical director Erich Bachen, Fieseler's entry was the most advanced in terms of STOL performance, by far. A fixed slat ran along the entire leading edge of the long wings, while the trailing edge, inspired by earlier 1930s Junkers aircraft wing control surface designs, including the ailerons, was a hinged and slotted flap. The wings could be folded back along the fuselage, allowing it to be carried on a trailer or even towed slowly behind a vehicle. The long legs of the landing gear contained oil and spring shock absorbers that compressed about 450 mm (18 inches) on landing, allowing the plane to set down almost anywhere. In flight they hung down, giving the aircraft the appearance of a very long-legged, big-winged bird, Hence its nickname, Storch. With its very low landing speed the Storch often landed "at place" or even backwards, in case of wind from directly ahead. The first Fi 156 V1 prototype flew in the spring of 1936. It was powered by a 180 kW (240 hp) inverted-vee Argus As 10C V8 engine, which gave the plane a top speed of only 175 km/h (109 mph), enabling the Storch to fly as slow as 50 km/h (32 mph), take off into a light wind in less than 45 m (150 ft), and land in ...

English Harvest (1938)

This film is showing as part of 'Britain at Bay: Peace & War 1937-1940', a touring programme of films from the BFI National Archive. Visit www.independentcinemaoffice.org.uk for more information. This early Dufaycolor documentary from Humphrey Jennings focuses on an August harvest in Sawston, Cambridgeshire. The old makes way for the new as the trusty old scythe bows down to the horse-drawn binder and plough. Hard work, flat caps and pipes abound as we see the workers downing midday ale for sustenance and taking a break at 5 to sit in the fields for a cup of tea brought to them by their wives. The 'playground of the town' and 'workshop of the country', alias the great British countryside, has never looked better.
