Excerpt from a bizarre early stop-motion animation piece featuring Charley Bowers and a metal-eating bird. The creature devours junk from an auto scrapyard, then lays an egg that hatches and grows into a brand new car! Very impressive FX and way before CGI. Directed by Harold L. Muller.

A Quaint Little Railway (1930)

This short, silent film captures one of Britain's minor little railways: the Leek and Manifold Light Railway on the Staffordshire Moorlands. The railway opened in 1907, linking the villages of Waterhouses and Hulme End, and was built mainly for agricultural traffic, with a passenger service being a secondary consideration. Its route went through beautiful countryside in Staffordshire, and it is unfortunate that the intertitles state it as being shot in Derbyshire! In 1934 the entire line was closed by the North Staffordshire Railway. There is little in the way of recorded film material of this quaint little train, so this gem gives an invaluable insight into the railway. Deportation of Mexican-Americans During the 1930s

During the Great Depression, anywhere from one to two million people were deported in an effort by the government to free up jobs for those who were considered "real Americans" and rid the county governments of "the problem." The campaign, called the Mexican Reparation, was authorized by President Herbert Hoover. Estimates now indicate that approximately 60 percent of the people deported were children who were born in America and others who, while of Mexican descent, were legal citizens.

1930's Great Depression and Dust Bowl in Photos

This is a video I made for an English pre-reading activity of the book Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck (Awesome book by the way. It features photos from the Great Depression and The Dust Bowl. It's a little emotional, at least to me, and I just wanted to share it with the rest of the world. The Great Depression and The Dust Bowl were 2 tragic events that occurred in the 1930's and this is just a little piece of the history of that time. I don't own neither the photos nor the music. I found the pictures on different online sources and if their information is correct, they all date back to the 30's and 40's.

Classic Movie Bloopers (1930s and 1940s)

thefilmarchive.org A blooper is a short sequence of a film or video production, usually a deleted scene, containing a mistake made by a member of the cast or crew. These bloopers, or outtakes as they are also called, are often the subject of television shows or are occasionally revealed during the credit sequence at the end of comedy movies. (Jackie Chan and Burt Reynolds are both famous for including such reels with the closing credits of their movies.) Humorous mistakes made by athletes are often referred to as bloopers as well, particularly in baseball. Prominent examples of films with bloopers include: A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc., Valiant, Cheaper By the Dozen, and Cheaper By the Dozen 2. One of the earliest known bloopers is attributed to 1930s radio broadcaster Harry Von Zell, who accidentally referred to then-US President Herbert Hoover as "Hoobert Heever" during an introduction. Reportedly it was upon hearing of this mistake that Kermit Schafer was inspired to begin collecting bloopers, although the exact circumstances of the event have been debated. A similar situation occurred decades later when then-new president Gerald Ford was introduced as "Gerald Smith", the same name as an American Fascist leader from the 1930s. One famous out-take from Australian television is from the gameshow Who Dares Wins, hosted by former cricketer Mike Whitney. The scene involved Whitney introducing a challenge by throwing a water balloon from hand to hand and ...

Boston Fire Department 1930s

This video was complied from files in the Stillman Fire Collection, Perlinger Archives and put together to make this presentation represent how a huge building fire might have been fought in Boston, Massachusetts in the early 1930s. Note for general interest and comments that at 2:16 a relatively new American LaFrance pumper has a hand-crank siren and a Roto Ray warning light. However at 3:03 a similar ALF is shown with an electo-mechanical siren. Obviously, I added the sound effects to this video, but the original film was silent. If you wish to see the film as it was made you will need to turn your computer speakers off.
Beauty - Victorian Era to 1930's

Watch this video on my site www.lisae.me.uk for product links, tips and more info. This was the most difficult video I've ever had to edit as I had to cut out so many great anecdotes, interesting facts and amazing products. Seriously, I think I could easily have made a 10 minute film for each decade! Anyway here is a little glimpse of my visit to the house and collection of Madeleine Marsh. I tried to stay calm and focused but inside I was bursting to get my hands on all the amazing treasures that surrounded me! The second half of this video will feature the 1940's through to the 70's and some incredible items - Mary Quant crayons, the IT palette all the cool British girls aspired to own during the war and a powder compact in the shape of a grand piano... to name just a few! Stay tuned X Madeleines book is called The History of Compacts and Cosmetics: Beauty From Victorian Times to the Present Day and you can buy it on Amazon: www.amazon.co.uk All images from the book in this video are shown with permission.

American Music in the 1930s

We asked our viewers, "What do you think of when you think of the 1930s?" Amy S. from Columbus, Ohio, sent us this video, which discusses how the adversity of the times produced an explosion of creativity in popular music - in so many different genres! "I think that the '30s might be right up there with the '60s with regard to the lasting importance and influence on American music. And it makes sense, since the '60s was such a tumultuous decade as well," she writes.
